I woke up cold, naked, and alone. Four walls surrounded me. A floor was under me. Above me, the stars twinkled. I stared up at them for a moment, my mind completely blank. Something like a bat passed by overhead, it’s long tail like a kite’s against the sky. The world was silent.

Time passed. I lay unmoving on the floor. No questions entered my thoughts, because I knew there would be no answers. I couldn’t remember anything. So there I lay. And time passed.

The sky grew lighter. First blue, then pink, then orange and red like fire. The sun flared into existance. It was black. Black and bale and sinister. I sat up. My shadow was lighter than the world around it. Something in the back of my mind told me that this wasn’t normal. But what was? I didn’t know. All I knew was the four walls, and the floor, and the sky, and the black sun beating darkly down. Why did it light up the world if it was black? The questions came as my mind warmed with the air. Where was I? How did I get here? What and who was I? I stared at my hands. They were unfamiliar.
