Just thinking about 9/11...and I'm curious...where were you on this day in 2001? Everyone in my parent's generation knew exactly where they were when JFK was shot, and when Pearl Harbor was bombed, this is one of those monumental events for our generation ( Read more... )

I was at a little corner grocery store in Washington DC - roughly 4 blocks from the Capital. I was supposed to have an understudy rehearsal that afternoon and a show that night, so I went home to turn my groceries into "packed lunch and dinner" to discover my mom had been calling frantically for 15 minutes (of course, I didn't take my cell to the store that day).

I don't remember how much time passed before I went out and saw the hordes of people evacuating the capital on the one-way street I lived on. It was like walking into the set of a disaster movie and one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

Later that day, I sat in the theatre offices calling all of our cast (who had mostly gone home to NYC on their days off the day before), to make sure they were all okay, and to assure them that the show was cancelled. The oldest member of our cast was entirely hysterical, because some of his closest friends lived right across the street from the towers, so I ended up calling up another cast member in his hotel to go spend the afternoon with him.

By 4, my roommate and I were back in our apartment with the two interns who lived upstairs. We blocked the door open for the first and only time because we all needed to see as much humanity as we could.
