Kite and I went to a sheep shearing festival today! It was fun! We saw sheep being sheared! And got to pet angora rabbits! And llamas! And ALPACA! Seriously, alpaca may be the cutest adult creatures on the face of the planet. And sooo soft. If they didn't cost a fortune to raise, I'd keep them in the back yard. We also saw border collies at work, which was extremely cool. I'm a big fan of the breed and stand by my assertion that they're the smartest dogs ever. If I could quit my job and run a farm, we would have a bunch of them. (They make terrible pets for working people, because they need almost constant stimulation.)
The sheep shearing itself was neat, although I admit I got a little nervous when the guy took these HUGE scissors and cut right up to the sheep's eye with them. It takes such skill to do this sort of thing correctly, and I can't imagine there are a lot of people who can actually do the job. It was pretty cool to see a very old sk00l sort of trade happening right there in front of us. And they had baby sheep! Oh, the cuteness of lambs!
Kite would not let me buy an angora rabbit. He also mocked me for my impatience with the multitude of children. "Devina would like the petting zoo a lot more if it weren't for the damned kids all over the place." He bought me yarn, though, to make up for it. And homemade apple crisp. And fudge. We stopped short of the fried dough, even though I've never actually eaten fried dough.
Sadly, by the time the border collie demo was over, most of the vendors were packing up to leave, so we didn't get to buy much else. However, I've now seen a sheep jump (though not over fences), so that makes up for it. They really just sort of hop up in the air, straight-legged. It's comical.
It was definitely worth the price of admission. I really feel like it went toward a good cause and a casual, fun afternoon. We'll be going again next year!
