So I'm starting a feature in this blog called "What I'm Watching," which is what it sounds like: I talk about what I'm watching on TV (or not watching, in some cases). I don't want to bombard you all with a list of my fall schedule, because I actually want to talk about some of these shows, so I figure one show per post is fair. And that way, if it's not a show you're interested in, you can skip it.
How often will you see these? That depends on me and my attention span, and by that I mean I aim for one per week, but ideally, I'd like to post two or three until I get through my current tv schedule. So we'll see.
But let's get started, shall we? I absolutely had to feature The Office first.
Ever since I got hooked on it in season two, The Office has truly been "Must See TV" for me. It's rather sad that I'm having to DVR it this fall due to the ridiculously amount of quality programming competing for the time-slot on Thursday, but at least I get to watch it. The Office is now in its sixth season, and in its last episode, the writers did something that other shows couldn't get away with until a finale.
They married Jim and Pam.
But here's what I love about this couple and why I think it'll work: they keep the relationship real. The writers didn't string it out unnecessarily, or bring in soap-opera-esque elements to keep the two apart. They crushed, they had their own individual growing up to do, and then they came together as a couple. This season brought us their wedding (which had me grinning, but not crying) and I'm betting we're going to see the birth of "Baby Halpert" early next year. Oh, that's going to be one helluva episode. And the thing that makes me happy about the writers' treatment of Jim and Pam is that if something goes wrong, the audience is going to see it coming. It's going to be as real as if our own relationships fell apart, and while I hope it never comes to that, I have a feeling if it ever did, the audience will be behind the decision.
But that's not going to happen, so long live Jim and Pam! Their wedding was absolutely perfect, in its own weird, sweet way. I love that couple (and it doesn't hurt that for a while, especially in seasons one and two, I was Pam), and I'm glad to see them get a happy ending that's not an ending. :)
The rest of the show has been moving nicely, but now that Jim and Pam are married and everyone knows about her pregnancy, I hope to see some focus move to the other characters: Michael Scott's endless quest for true love (bring back Amy Ryan's Holly, PLEASE), Dwight and Angela's oh-so-very-strange relationship, and maybe some fresh interaction with characters we never imagined hooking up (in a friendship way, not necessarily in a relationship way). Andy's lusting after the receptionist Erin, but I love seeing him and Kelly interact, as they feel like two peas in a pod. And I want to see them do something more with Phyllis. I don't know why, but I do.
I am thrilled to see the dynamic of the office changing a bit with Jim's promotion. Again, that's the realism talking, so everyone isn't in the SAME EXACT ROLE they were back in season one (some are, mind you, and some have risen to the top and fallen right back down). At the end of last season, I started wondering just how long The Office should continue, but to be honest, I still really enjoy the episodes, and I'm often laughing until I cry. That's a good sign for a comedy that's in its sixth season, so I'm a happy camper.
My only real complaint about the show is that they're still showing the same opening credits from season one. It drives me completely bonkers, especially now that we have some new cast members!
Overview
Station: NBC
Time: Thursdays @ 9:00 pm est
Status: Season Six
Where to Start? The Office is one of those shows you can pick up at any time, though you might be a little lost with all the weirdness. It's always fun to start at season one and see how everyone and every thing changes and grows, and you can catch reruns on TBS.
