Thoughts on Farscape

Well, tonight I finished the first season of Farscape (with the exception of the episodes that didn't cooperate), and here's what I think (I apologize up front for any misspellings. Correct me and move on):

1) The theme song. The chorus makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a spork and eat them for dinner. Seriously, it's horrible. And the way the chorus ends? *ears bleed*

2) What happened to Stark (the guy Crichton met in the cell during Nerve and A Hidden Memory)? I know he's in the series, but how the hell he went from being ON THE SHIP to magically just not being there for the rest of the season (and an explanation would've been lovely), just baffles me. I'm sure they'll explain it later in S2, but right now, I'm frothing.

saava had a hysterical post entitled "Watch Farscape, Dammit!!!" and she listed all the reasons why people should watch. And I can safely say I'm not disappointed.

First, the characters amaze me. Or should I say the characterization? There's real work to make these people more than one dimensional characters, and it's nice watching villans you aren't sure you can trust (like Crais) or villans you adore but know you shouldn't (like Scorpius). And speaking of the latter, damn the subtle change from his character between the end of S1 and the first episode of S2. Damn...

All the other characters are great too, even the ones who rub on my nerves a bit, like Rygel. I like the interaction between them, how the relationships manage to approach exactly what they need to for each episode and don't get carried away. It's a show with real platonic love between people, not this crazy mis-mash of pairings that so many fandoms get carried away with (course, I'm not INTO the Farscape fandom, so aside from John/Aeryn, I don't know what pairings are out there, so I guess it's safe to say that from my POV, the relationships are played up to the point where making them more than they are is silly to me. It's not like Alias, where there's romantic possibilities around every corner (not that that's bad), or like HP, where people are at war over their ships.) And speaking of John and Aeryn, I really really like how that's being handled so far.

Second, the set and the environment I'm sold on. Seriously. There's nothing worse that watching a show or movie where you can't buy the settings around you (Star Wars prequels, *cough!!!!*), but Farscape does well to make everything fit into context. The language barriers? Totally explained and worked out in the first ep, and there's lovely moments in A Human Reaction that is SO DAMN PERFECT when it came to the language that I could kiss the writers for being smart enough to think of it. And the sets are amazing, real and gritty and right now.

And that, really, is all the squeeage I have for now. I'm trying to get two to three eps in a day (I even gave up my SG-1 marathon today, *sobs*) so I can finish the series (hopefully) before the mini comes out. I think I'll make it. :)

The long and short of it, though, is that if you have ANY FLARE at all for space-opera types of movies or shows, you'll like Farscape. It's a smart show, it really is.
