[Waking in a human bed, and in what was clearly a child's room, was among the list of things Lucifer least expected. The world he had least been in, as he had left it, had been torn apart. Had been painted over new as it changed from the world of man to a blank slate of sorts: the Vortex world. The idea that he should be in a household that was ( Read more... )

[Amaimon is out walking the stupid family drone dog, which is, sadly, nowhere near as great as Behemoth. By walk, we mean standing by a tree with it while it sniffs everything. Bor-ing.

So when random Mayfield child number five thousand and three wanders by threatening the sky, it grabs his attention.]

Who are you talking to?

[Lucifer stops and turns around. Not overly quick. Naturally, as if someone he'd known all his life had just called to him instead of a stranger.]

Oh. Just myself.

This place reminds me of someone.

They must be a very boring someone, then, but whoever they are, they did not bring you here.

[Honestly, everyone keeps getting it wrong about this place.]

Boring, I suppose, is the nicest thing you can say.

No? Then who did?

This is only another one of older brother's prisons. You probably aren't even real.

Older brother?

[It's indeed a prison, but this...]

I assure you, I'm real.

Yes. My brother Mephisto put me here.

[He stares at Lucifer for a moment, considering whether he might be real or not. Brother did collect many strange things, why not a town of people?]

Well, if you are sure, that's good for you.

[A demon then. Is the man he's speaking with a demon as well? Asking outright would give away his own nature. He'd have to be more careful in approaching.]

Why would he do that?

Oh. I'm Louis. Louis Cyphre. And you?

[It is difficult to tell whether he's demon or human, thanks to Mayfield. For now, he looks like a perfectly normal man, if oddly dressed.]

There was a disagreement over the rules. [Also because Mephisto is a jerkface.] Hmm? I am Amaimon.

Rules tend to bring trouble with them.

[Which is kind of a big reason he ended up falling from grace.]

I am Louis. Louis Cyphre. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Amaimon.

[Demon. Definitely a demon, or at least not human.]

[With a name like Amaimon, definitely demon.]

Even when you play by them. I never killed any of his little humans, I never broke his school. It was not I who set the forest on fire. I was not the one who broke the rules!

[He had been deadpan and blank of expression up until then, but recalling how the fight back home had ended -- with his brother throwing him away so easily! How dare he! -- gets a rise out of him. There's a brief flash of anger as he recounts it and he ends up yanking the dog that had been with him about when he gestures with the hand holding the leash. It's not enough to kill the dog, thankfully, but it does make the poor beast stagger.

But the anger passes quickly and all returns to the same old monotone immediately after.]

But nothing can be done about that. [A sigh.] Oh well. [The boy gets a blink from him after that, the first one since they began talking.] Is it nice to meet me?

[People keep saying that. It's hard to believe they mean it.]

[Lucifer has to work to hide the smile coming across his face at that outburst. Had Lucifer been upset when he was kicked from Heaven, for a similar idea of "breaking the rules"? ...He couldn't remember, by this point. He supposes it doesn't matter, considering he's never regretted it, either.

But still, that little flash of anger? Lets him know you have hate in you. And he can work with hate, Amaimon.]

Is that so? Can nothing be done about it, or only just for now?

Indeed, it is.

[He might not betray it often, but it's there. Just below that deadpan surface. All it takes is the right situation and then, well, that's what -- in his mind -- landed him here in Mayfield. How else do you stop a force of nature?]

For now. There is no pressing need to escape at this time. [Amaimon's head tilts a little to one side.] Oh. Is that a truth, or is it only a greeting?

I suppose there isn't.

[After all, he needs time to figure out the rules and laws of this place. To see how the battle is to be fought here.]

It is a truth. I only speak such.

[Which is....well, a lie. But he's being honest right now.]

Do you now...

[He leans over to get a closer look at the child, his eyebrows raised.]

Perhaps that was a truth, but everyone lies.

[A demon can't believe that, that anyone can truly be honest all the time.]

Do they?

Or do you just believe them too?

[It's a ridiculous question. Lucifer already knows the answer, but he might as well play a little bit.]
