Wooyoung paced back and forth. The snow falling around him, yet he was unfazed by it. He walked and turned and walked some more, never stopping to notice the long snow trail he had made. He stopped and looked at the house in front of him. Being nervous was an understatement. Never had he felt so nauseous and excited at the same time, proving this to be one of the biggest things he had ever done.
He stepped out of the path that he made and into the fresh snow around it. He slowly ascended onto the steps and climbed closer and closer to what felt like his death. At the top of the steps, Wooyoung stood in front of the door, terrified. It was one of the easiest things to do, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Knocking, seemed like such a feat, that he was meant to achieve, but he had to. How was it that something that felt like it would end his life, was also holding the very survival?
knock, knock, knock
Wooyoung wanted to run. He had, in fact, positioned his feet to do so, but his heart wouldn’t let him. It seemed childish to come all the way here to ask a question, but it was a question that needed answering.
Knock, knock, knock
He should just go. Clearly no one was home. He didn’t know where exactly they would have gone in this weather but, of course he was standing out there. Wooyoung turned to leave the house, when the door opened behind him.
“Hello?”
He didn’t want to turn around. His feet were glued where he stood and he was really wishing he had run when he had the chance. It wasn’t the voice he was expecting, but the voice of a woman. Wooyoung could feel her staring at the back of his head. He never even thought about her coming to the door. This was definitely, not going to plan. Of course, there wasn’t really one, but whatever Wooyoung had seen in his head, didn’t go like this.
There was nowhere for him to go, so he decided to face her head on.
“Hi.” He said as he turned back around.
Wooyoung didn’t bother faking like he wanted to talk to her. She did the same, not even responding to his gesture.
“Is Khun here?” She just stared.
His patience was growing thin. He knew that he wasn’t exactly the ideal guest, but all he wanted to do was ask a question. It really shouldn’t have been this hard. If only Khun had come to the door instead!
“What do you want?”
Wooyoung rolled his eyes.
“I just asked if Khun was here.”
“So?”
“So, obviously, I want to speak with Khun.”
“No.”
Wooyoung was shocked. This girl; she was the reason that he was on the other side of the door, looking in. She had taken Khun away, and now that he had come back, just to ask a question, she wasn’t going to allow it? This was unbelievable!
“I’m sorry, but when did you change your name to Khun?”
“You need to leave.”
“I’m not leaving ‘till I talk to Khun.” Wooyoung fought back.
She slammed the door in his face. He knew she was sneaky bitch, but this felt worse than when Khun left him for her. Wooyoung banged on the door.
“Victoria!!! Open the door!! I need to ask him a question!!! It’s important!”
He banged harder and harder and then heard the sound of a baby crying. His heart stopped. They had a baby. Wooyoung’s arm fell limply at his side. He slowly turned around and headed down the steps. The door opened behind him.
“Wooyoung?”
He was on the third step, when he stopped. His feet buried in the snow, hands hidden in his pockets, half of his face covered by his scarf and his ears tucked under his earmuffs, he turned around to face Khun. He was every bit as beautiful as he had remembered. Wooyoung didn’t know why, but he had expected Khun to look drastically different after their yearlong separation.
“Wooyoung.”
The way he said his name, was reason enough for him to break down, right there on the steps, but he refused to give Victoria, who he knew was watching from some place in the house, the satisfaction.
“You have a baby?!”
“Wooyoung. What are you doing here?”
Wooyoung felt the tears leave his eyes. He quickly smacked his hands to his face to wipe them away.
“I don’t know. Nevermind. I don’t know.” Wooyoung continued down the steps.
“Wooyoung…”
He stopped again, now on the landing. He stood in the path that he made earlier, now freashly covered with snow. He didn’t dare turn around. Khun would see the huge mess that he had turned into fro the third step to the landing. He could hear Khun’s footsteps in the snow behind him, descending the steps. Khun grabbed Wooyoung’s shoulders and turned him around. He stared at Wooyoung, taking in every single one of his ex’s features. It seemed that a year felt like eternity to Khun too.
Half of Wooyoung’s face was hidden, but Khun could imagine, what he didn’t see. He knew Wooyoung hated the cold, terribly, so whatever he came there for, had to be big. He looked into Wooyoung’s bloodshot eyes, his heart breaking. He had chosen this life; it was a life that didn’t involve Wooyoung, that couldn’t involve Wooyoung and he couldn’t regret his decision.
“Im sorry.”
Wooyoung stared at Khun. How he was standing in front of him, without a jacket on, the snow falling around them, he had no idea.
“I forgave you a long time ago, Khun.” Wooyoung spoke through his scarf. “I just came here to ask you a question…but now that I’m standing here with you, I feel foolish.”
“Just ask.”
“I just wondered…do you ever think of me? Anymore?”
Luckily, Wooyoung’s scarf was covering up half of his face, if not khun would have seen the extreme amount of blush that crept up his neck to his face, even through the red the cold had made his cheeks. He felt like a weight had been lifted. That question had been on his mind since a few months after Khun left. He let him go willingly and had to learn to deal with the fact that he had left, but he always wonder if a part of khun still loved him and if he thought about him as much as he did or at all.
Khun had yet to answer his question, when Wooyoung turned around once again and started to walk away. He had put his heart out on the line coming there. If it wasn’t embarrassing enough to have your boyfriend, who promised his heart to you, leave you for a woman, he had to stand there and take his silence. Wooyoung was done.
“Yes.”
He stopped dead in his tracks; afraid that if he moves, it would turn out to be a dream, he stayed put.
“What?”
“I said yes.”
This had to be some type of joke. This was supposed to be Wooyoung’s last resort in distancing himself from Khun and now it was ruined. Yes he had learned to deal with the fact that Khun had left, but he had yet to move on and coming there was supposed to be for reassurance that he had to start. He expected Khun to say ‘no.’ He had fully prepared himself for the heartbreak.
Everything was different now. Khun still thought about him, but even so he still had a child with a woman.
“Why are you doing this to me?”
Wooyoung still didn’t turn around. He could barely see in front of him, due to the amount of tears falling from his eyes, let alone turn around.
“What am I doing? You asked me a question and I answered.”
The snow was falling harder around them now. He knew that if he didn’t end this conversation soon, he would do something foolish and surely Khun would freeze to death.
“You were supposed to say no! Push me away, tell me to never come back to your hosue ever again. ANYTHING!!!! Anything, but what you just said.”
To on lookers, wooyoung would have looked very foolish, seemingly yelling at no one in front of him.
“You wanted me to lie?!?!”
Khun was getting frustrated now. He hated seeing Wooyoung like this. He wished he hadn’t come there in the first place, but now that he was there, there was no use in hiding his feelings.
“YES!”
Wooyoung had finally turned around. There was every single emotion, imaginable, written on his face.
“Well, I can’t lie to you.”
“Oh you’re so bold! You weren’t so afraid to lie to me a year ago, when you were sneaking around with that whore!”
Khun head fell. Wooyoung just didn’t get that that was the reason he hated lying to him. He’s done it once and this is where it got him. He was now a father and in a relationship with a woman, who he could never possibly love, but he could never tell Wooyoung this. There was no way, Wooyoung could even find out how unhappy he was.
“I’m sorry.”
Wooyoung took a few steps forward, and then stopped. He knew Khun wasn’t happy. He could read him, just like he could when they were together. He really just wanted to run to him and take him away from this place.
“Why are you with her? Was it something I did? Did I drive you to be with a woman?”
“No, Wooyoung. Please don’t blame yourself.”
Wooyoung watched his ex plead with him. Khun never showed any sign of being cold, although his skin said otherwise.
“Then why?”
He could never tell him.
“Wooyoung, I’m sorry, but it has to be this way. Please just go home and never come back.”
Khun turned and walked up his front steps. This was exactly what Wooyoung had wanted but instead of it making him feeling better, giving him reason to move on, it only hurt like hell. He watched Khun enter his house, tears rolling down his cheeks.
Why did he need to know?
