A few things:
I'm reading through the above book at my leisure (covers are different, but the guts are the same), and I've gotta say... it's fantastic. Something about it is just so engaging to me. I've never been able to read through an instructive book about creative writing, because they seem dull, or flat, or their examples of "good writing" sound like flat trumpets to my ears. But this one? The pacing is fabulous, it has awesome tricks and "try this" exercises, and it just keeps building on itself -- teaching you a definition in the simplest terms, then building on that definition and immediately using it in the next chapter.
Already, I feel like a better writer because of this book. And an extra bonus: I found it in the back of a local bookstore for $1.
The next: I went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch today, and there were 7 Italian men there. I knew they were Italian men because I could recognize the language, and that just made me EXTREMELY giddy. To be honest, I was debating on whether what I was hearing was Español or Italiano, but after some heavy evesdropping (which I did not understand one single bit), my brother finally noticed that the table on the other side of the room was speaking an entirely different language, and confirmed that they were, in fact, speaking Italian. (He used to work in a restaurant that those same men visited a lot, so recognized the guys moreso than the accent.)
REGARDLESS, I have learned a few (very, very few) phrases here and there, but have been slacking off a bit in lieu of this new writing book. Solution: Spend the same amount of time practicing Italian as I do practicing writing techniques.
Still need to start on my damned
vacationthon fic -- but I'm wanting to re-watch all of Being Human to get a grasp on the characters again, and figure out at which point I want to spin off.
deancasbigbang has been at a stand-still ever since I breached the 5k mark. I only have to write 10k, but finishing a story is more difficult than writing a story, by leaps and bounds.
AND I KNOW I HAVE BEEN SLACKING AS A PROPER LJ FRIEND. I need to respond to comments. ._.
Relatives have been visiting this weekend, one after the other successively, and I'm planning on watching Thor AGAIN this Monday with some friends.
Also, Connecticut move is fast approaching. I have a train wreck of a closet to clean out, and a 12-string guitar to sell before I'm up and away. Lots of books, too. I have no idea how long I'll be staying with my relatives up North, but I'm kind of hoping I won't have to move in with my parents again after this; college in January, and relatives in Nashville have offered to let me come live with them if things in Connecticut don't work out.
Just because my life is at a stand-still doesn't mean it's not hella busy.
