How have you been, nice to see you again...

Yeah, I've been AWOL for a while. So here's a massive update of random crap.

Alright, so let's start with the epic fun that is birthdays. Megs, enjoy Jack O'Neill would you? Mycha, hope your year goes well.

Now on to less fun things...Holy crap, I'm a moron. 2 lit courses, a creative writing course, a language course AND a humanities course. If you need me, I'll be over in the corner rocking back and forth, tearing my hair out. There hasn't been one week that I haven't had at least one paper due. So yeah, mild craziness there.

But amusement has been had. Over Halloween weekend, Phoenix (two hours south of where I am) had a con. Saboten-con started last year and was able to bring in Greg Ayres, Laura Bailey, and Johnny Yong Bosch. This year, they swiped Vic Mignogna, Chuck Huber, and Steven Blum.

Vic is a complete sweetheart. Chuck is a bit of a goofball (not many people will willingly do the chicken dance in front of a room of people). Steve was probably the most withdrawn of the three...Which isn't really saying much: he was still pretty outgoing.

Naturally, because it was Halloween, my group decided that we'd dress up on Saturday... I'm not sure how confusing it was to see Miyu (of Vampire Princess Miyu) and Robin (of WHR) leading No-Face (of Spirited Away) around, but it was definitely fun. All I can say is, holy crap I have a new respect for Robin. After about 3 hours, my scalp was numb. I also had about an extra foot of fabric trailing the ground (curse you, accuracy!) so walking was an interesting endeavor. Also, numb scalp + fabric train + heels = not very effective at running away from Jareth the Goblin King.

And before anyone asks, no, I'm not posting pictures. 2 reasons: 1) I hate pictures of me, 2) I don't have any pictures. Go pester my roommate.

On to other things that won't drive Megan up a wall...Much... Two of my bands have recently come out with albums. Sonata Arctica released 'The Days of Grays' and Epica put out 'Design Your Universe'.

'Days of Grays' is an interesting album, complex and accessible at the same time. It's dark and romantic, while still maintaining a sort of lightness. Tony has definitely stepped up in both the songwriting and the orchestrations. If you can find the orchestral versions, specifically of Deathaura, Flag in the Ground, and Juliet, get them. There's some amazing stuff going on in the background of the album that gets covered.

'Design Your Universe' is probably most easily described as 'thought-provoking'. Epica's albums each have an overarching theme: 'Consign to Oblivion' dealt with the collapse of Mayan civilization, 'The Divine Conspiracy' dealt with the idea that God created many religions in order for man to discover that they were fundamentally the same, 'Design Your Universe' deals with new breakthroughs in quantum physics which state that we are all connected on the subatomic level and that we can influence matter with our thoughts. This band is very quickly becoming one of my favorites. They're capable of extremely harsh, almost off-putting, moments and moments of amazingly beautiful music. If you want a taste of their range on this album, check out Tides of Time, and Resign to Surrender...Or you could go straight for the magnum opus Kingdom of Heaven.

On a similar note, I've been throwing together a fanmix. It's been alternately fun and frustrating. Fun because I can't think of any other way I could cohesively have Within Temptation, A Perfect Circle, and Marianas Trench all on one album. Frustrating because, well, I can be a perfectionist and the transitions are kind of kicking my ass.

At any rate, be expecting that relatively soon...Or at least whenever I can make everyone happy in my head and my roommate works her Photoshop majick.

And thus ends the giant update. Hope everyone is well. Talk to y'all soon.

music, massive update
