He had been immersed in a book, a Thomas Pynchon novel that hadn't yet been written at the time of his death, when Dorian knocked.

Setting the book back neatly on the bookshelf, he glanced at the bottle of absinthe, untouched since the previous night, and the unopened bottle of vintage merlot on the table. He could already tell his new friend would be in need of a drink.

He opened the door, inviting the other man in. In contrast to Dorian's room, Adrian's was all cold marble and minimalism, tasteful interior decorating, of course, but for the most part, it gave the impression of a museum more than it did a bedroom. The few statues and busts from antiquity only added to that effect. He smiled courteously, inviting the other inside.

Dorian allowed himself to be shown in, and took stock of the room. It was not as warm as his own, but it was exquisite. Though it was very much the opposite of what he was used to, stark and clean rather than lush and decadent, he felt as though he could be comfortable here if he were in the mood.

"Since you left this morning, I have had the worst day imaginable..."

Adrian would sense the truth of this from his expression, one of disgust, and his demeanor, lacking introductions and calm.

He was already uncorking the wine and pouring them each a glass.

"Tell me about it," he said, voice laced with sympathy. Dorian was obviously quite frazzled, something he was perhaps unused to, being so new to the barge. Adrian could empathize. He himself had had a number of unpleasant experiences, but nothing so unpleasant as what Dorian had experienced, as he was about to find out.

"I hardly know what to tell you first," he said, clearly not used to having so many truly distasteful things happen to him in so short a span of time.

He collected his thoughts for a moment and looked at Adrian. Here and now was normal, tasteful, pristine. Adrian was cultured, well mannered and gentlemanly. Yet the instant he left and returned to the barge at large, he would be amidst animals and heathens.

He spilled his troubles at once, no longer able to keep it all in, "My warden is intolerably rude, I am running out of cigarettes, and as if that weren't enough, someone shat in the shower."

He looked desperate for someone to share in his disgust.
