[The first part of this entry is completely private. Dorian wrote in his journal for himself only. Afterwards, he addresses a note to Adrian Veidt. Adrian is the only character who is able to leave a response to this entry. I am sorry for any and all confusion.]

Given your inmate status, people will be made aware that you've done something to deserve your time here: a bargain with the devil should suffice, but most aren't so direct in asking about what you've done to deserve this. Either way, your reputation is already tarnished. There is a host of people proclaiming their innocence, but no one believes a word that they say.

[Adrian is thinking of how to handle Oscar Wilde now. He doesn't have to think for long.]

You're lucky that most people here aren't quite educated enough to know much about "Oscar Wilde." He was a real man, at least in my world, and quite interesting. He was known for his witticisms, probably borrowed from Lord Henry.

It seems more than likely that Henry was a ghost writer for the man. It is Oscar Wilde's only major novel, aside from a collection of short stories, plays, and poetry.

I'm used to letting my PR men handle tarnished reputations. The best you can do is stick with your story, and people will come to see you as a person rather than a character from an obviously biased novel.

Perhaps sort out a group of people you can trust and have them lie to those who accuse you. Let them say that it was discovered, in their world, that "Oscar Wilde" was a hack who built his name from a ghost writer: your Lord Henry. It will, at the very least, cause confusion, if more than one person supports it.

[Dorian has read and absorbed the entire response, but replies only to one point.]

I should like to meet with you at your soonest convenience to further discuss this 'Oscar Wilde.' I would prefer to meet privately, in person, as I fear someone might intercept these missives. Unless you prefer otherwise, I would like to invite you to my room on the seventh floor, room number one.
