The lake had obviously seen better days. Its waters were murky; it was impossible to tell whether it was shallow or deep. All parts of it were the same noncommittal brownish colour, its calm surface disturbed by the occasional bit of floating trash. The sky overhead roughly matched the lake, perhaps a bit darker; the lake was settled under a city overhang. All of the gasses produced by the factories and trucks tended to drift here, hanging over the scene in noxious clouds.

The path surrounding the lake was beaten, grown over by items of stray vegetation; no one bothered to clear them away, just as no one bothered to keep it clean. More trash littered the path…candy bar wrappers and plastic bags and discarded food items and even the odd article of clothing. It was a sad sight, if only because it had once been purer, lovelier, less filthy, and now...it had become contaminated.

Pollution gazed at it in awe, his eyes approving and his lips curving in a delighted smile. He radiated satisfaction and pleasure in a soft glow, like the moon's barely visible light. "It's beautiful," he whispered.

Famine nodded absently. "Yes, it is," he agreed, his voice distracted. He was not looking at the lake.

They twined their fingers together and kissed underneath the smog-filled sky. It was filthy and gloomy and murky and smelled of cities -- the damp, dark, oozing smell of civilization and its ruins -- and it was just the way they liked it.
