Abilities? Many, many abilities. First off, physical abilities.
Vergil is very tough. He takes tons and tons of damage in the game, impalings, gunshots, punches, electric bolts, burning sword-slashes, he practically walks off it all. As far as strength goes, I have read somewhere that Dante can lift up to 10 tons, and since Vergil is none the less than his brother, he is most likely that strong as well. Dante is seen to punch the head clean of a common type of demon, so I suppose his mere physical strength is somewhere on that level as well. As for speed, Vergil can move to any point of the battlefield in-game in a split-second no matter where he is. He is seen dodging bullets, and actually intercepting and returning them with his sword with the same power and speed as if they were fired from a pistol. Agility and senses are “far more advanced than those of any human”, which is an iffy quote yet one I use nonetheless.
As for his arsenal, Vergil is much less diverse than Dante. He primary wields the Yamato, a sword with the ability to cut through anything “from the human plane”. I am going to interpret this as practically anything non-magical, since he is seen to slice whole statues into half. His skill with this sword is amazing, to the point where he can deflect and return bullets with it. Yamato has the elemental affinity of Darkness, and can also summon something I call the Orbs of Cutting, who are basically big, purple orbs that slices anything inside it to pieces.
As for magical tricks, Vergil foremost has the Devil Trigger. A meter which fills when Vergil is injured, gives injuries or simply concentrates, and which allows him to transform into a devil. The devil state is tougher, stronger and faster, regenerates and comes with nifty side-bonuses. The enemy boss Nevan, a succubus/vampire (Or as most know her, “the electrical bat-whore”), can suck Dante’s lifeenergy out and transfer it to her, but Devil Triggering interrupts her attempts. Also, when in Devil Trigger mode, she cannot even initiate life-sucking at all.
Also, Vergil has no guns. Instead he summons magical swords which can penetrate you good. These swords come in different “levels”, so to speak. At the first level they are merely Bullet-Swords. The appear and fly towards the opponent and get their stabbing on. These he can use an unlimited amount of times, and it’s apparently not even a very big drain on him. On the second level Vergil creates more solidified sword, six as the maximum, and either makes them rotate around him like a shield, or teleport them into your personal space for immediate stabbination. Nasty stuff.
Then there is Corrupted Vergil.
At the end of Devil May Cry 3, Vergil jumps into hell and fights with Mundus, the Dark Lord of Infinite Meanspiritedness. Vergil loses because he’s not strong enough, and is brainwashed by Mundus. He is also “infected”, you could say, with Mundus power. It’s best imagined as an alternative Devil Trigger. He can initiate it at will, but he doesn’t totally remain in control of himself. This form is stronger than the ordinary Vergil, and has a Devil Trigger of its own: Nero Angelo. Nero Angelo is a bad-ass mofo. He wields a gigantic sword as big as himself as easily as Vergil wields his katana, can shoot bursts of dark energy AND teleport. Nasty, nasty stuff.
“But”, you might say, “He might be tough, but my character knows tricks or spells that weaken or enfeeble my opponent.” Well, good for you. But see, while Vergil hasn’t been in an RPG, Dante has. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne has the following kind of offensive spells:
-Mind spells, that lets you affect your enemies state of mind.
-Nerve spells, which causes stuff like paralysis and magical bindings. Think seals and such spells.
-Curse spells, which is what it sounds like. In game it causes Poisoning and Mute status, which stops you from using spells.
-Support Spells, which does stuff like lower strength or defense or generally make you weaker and gives you Status Ailments.
-Ice, Fire, Wind (Although it’s called ‘Force’ here) and Electricity spells. Self explanatory.
-Death spells and Expel spells. Death is basically what it sounds like: dark, evil spells that leave you on the verge of death or dead. Expel is apparently “anti-demonic” energy spells, which is what passes for Holy or Light spells in the game.
So. Isn’t that a nice list? Pretty much covers everything you can think off. On a further note, Dante is immune to all of them except Ice, Fire Wind and Electricity. He’s just resistant against those.
Yeah. He’s IMMUNE to instant death spells. And anti-demonic spells. And mind-control, and curses and magical bindings and seals. All of it.
Now then, this is not canon of course. It’s just a cross-over, after all, but it is as close a guide as we can come to how Dante, and thereby Vergil would be affected by spells like these. See, Dante’s race in the game is Majin: the highest rank of all supernatural creatures available. And in a game where there are Gods walking the earth and do combat with you (For an example, the game’s version of Thor is actually ranked LOWER than Dante) that’s saying something. Note that it’s not just highest demon rank, but highest supernatural rank. Qoute: “Majin are without exception (in this game at least) the chief deities of their pantheons. They are amongst the most powerful races in the game [...] They are well-rounded all-purpose demons, adept in both physical and magical combat.” He ranks up there with Vishnu, Odin, Horus, Mithra the Riders of The Apocalypse and the foremost High Angels of Christian Faith. Suffice to say, that is one bad-ass devil.
However. The Dante in that game is the oldest version of Dante, from Devil May Cry 2. It thus stands to reason that he is the most powerful version since that Dante has awakened his true demonic power. Hence, claiming that Vergil has all those immunities by virtue of race would be stretching the truth a little. I have honestly not quite settled for what passes for magic which could affect Vergil, but if you are wondering I suggest hitting me up on IRC or send me a mail and we will work things out. He IS however being played as susceptible to mindtricks like illusions and so on, due to the fact that because of Mundus influence his mind has become a corrupted mess.
So in short: resistant against pretty much everything you throw at him, yet vulnerable to mind tricks. Yeah. You better hope you got sneaky stuff up your sleeve.
