Chapter 4 - Just When You Think You Got Out….

Freedom felt good to John, it always did. This time, however, his freedom was a bit more relative. After accepting the job, John was released without any problem. Which was a true testament of Donnie’s power and influence; He could turn a murder in to a traffic ticket. Unfortunately, in exchange for his influence, John had become something along the lines of Donnie’s bitch.

‘Great, I’m outta the cage, only to be put on a leash.’ John mused.

In one car and out another, all very hush-hush, John lost his sense of direction somewhere between the fifth and sixth car change. Eventually his odyssey stopped almost expectedly on the top level of a parking garage on a hill. The view was picturesque; the top level overlooked the entire city, the sunset, and the lands beyond.

‘Always thought God was a symbolist,’ John thought, ‘and a good for nothing one at that.’

Against the blood red clouds was a large, pot bellied figure, an older man well into his sixties, staring out into the distance and taking a long drag on his cigar. His long grey trench coat blew behind him in the wind, giving him an image fit for Superman. Well, Superman in his later years.

“It’s been a long time Donnie.” John called out. The large figure turned and faced John, chuckled in a low, scratchy voice.

“How long has it been since I last heard the call of Black Death?”

“I don’t wanna talk about old times Donnie.”

“Come now, humor and old man for awhile. A visit from you is so rare these days John, things aren’t like they used to. We’ve passed those golden years John, like when you and Vic were a team. His death was untimely, but why did you let it destroy you?”

“….”

“Oh, look at me, rambling like an old fool. Your right, let’s get down to business.”

“What’s the job?”

“It’s a six man gig, a heist at diamond way-station. Security’s pretty lax, because they usually just hold unpolished stones for the syndicate. But on the day, there getting some real sweet stuff from Israel.”

“The exposure?”

“Two minutes, but a tough two minutes. Daylight during business hours, crowd control. You’ll need to be quick.”

“Will there be anybody I know on this team?”

“Everybody on this operation will be using aliases.”

“I’m gonna need to know more than that if I’m going to commit armed robbery Donnie.

“I know, I know. Look, you’re the last one on the team, so we’re having a meeting tomorrow. Everything’ll be covered then. Go home, get some rest, and there’ll be a car waiting for you at nine in the morning tomorrow.”

With that, Donnie and John left to there respective cars. The ride back to his home was a long one for John, and he took full advantage of Donnie’s ostentatiously luxurious sedan by finding sleep in its soft leather seats.
