ESSAYS AND SPOILERS FOR A PLOT NO ONE CARES ABOUT

SOME MINI ESSAYS/THOUGHTS/HEAD CANON REGARDING THOSE THINGS IN THE GAME THAT AREN'T TALKED ABOUT BECAUSE DMC4 HAET BACK STORY
Nero mentions both that he's always hated his arm, and that his arm recently changed. IT DOESN'T GET MORE DETAILED THAN THAT. The way I am INTERPRETING THIS is that Nero's arm more or less always looked like it does now, possibly a little less cool and a little less glowy. But always kind of fucked up and demonic. This would lead to Nero having a SPECIAL GLOVE for it that hides it from view, as seen in the opening of the game, which he probably wore all the time. It's mentioned several time that Nero has lots of rumors surrounding him. This is a mix of his rotten personality and his arm. His rotten personality PROBABLY DEVELOPED as a defensive mechanism against the fact that he has a MYSTERIOUS MESSED UP ARM THAT LOOKS KIND OF LIKE A CLAW in a highly religious society that kills demons.
FOR YOU SEE. Nero != Dante. Dante pretty much naturally doesn't give a fuck about what anyone thinks. Because he's Dante and he's amazing and he has had lots of sex and been doing cool demonic things all his life. Oh and his dad is like the most amazing demon EVER and so on and so forth. BASICALLY. What makes Dante DANTE is that he's 100% completely full of confidence, and he didn't develop this as a defensive mechanism, he's not SECRETLY AFRAID OF BEING REJECTED, DEEP INSIDE. He pretty much just is that amazing. The end. And BELIEVING IN HOW AMAZING HE IS which such confidence that he doesn't need to prove it to anyone, and can say and do INCREDIBLY RETARDED AND STUPID THINGS and still feel that he is the COOLEST GUY EVER is pretty much why Dante is amazing.
Nero can't do this! Nero IS confident and probably still more secure in himself than the average person. But it's entirely because he LEARNED at some point to tell the world to go fuck itself. Nero's got a very defensive "If you don't like it you can bite me" kind of attitude. This doesn't mean he's angry all the time, and it doesn't prevent him from having fun! But it is why he regularly tells people to piss off rather than ACTUALLY not caring.
ANYWAY I GOT SIDETRACKED. But basically, raised with a twisted demonic arm in a place where it's REALLY NOT GOOD to have various rumors about your arm floating around. Got defensive over it, and because he's POWERFUL he got bitchy and "whatever" about it instead of really DEEPLY bothered. I do think he's always been inhumanly strong/fast etc, just that the arm didn't start doing GLOWY GRABBY SHIT until Kyrie was in danger and Nero snapped.
Anyway. So Nero is good at fighting. Liek fighting. And prefers to do it alone. In becoming REALLY GOOD at killing demons, stuff eases up on him, because he's contributing to society in that society's FAVORITE WAY TO CONTRIBUTE: KILLING DEMONS. Yaay! And since he works alone no one has to actually get close to him or deal with his now very surly personality. Nero carves out A PLACE for himself, precarious as it might be, and everyone wins.
Then Kyrie gets in danger, Nero flips out, THE INNER DEMON AWAKENS and his arm is glowy and probably more messed up and demonic looking. IN THE GAME every time someone sees Nero's arm they either go "DEMON!1!!" or "........deeemoooonnn...??" Nero automatically tries to keep from seeing it and asking about it. I assume thus there was a significant enough change in appearance that even people who have seen it many times before (Kyrie and Credo) wonder if it isn't now REALLY DEMONIC. And everyone who isn't already familiar with it ASSUMES that OF COURSE it's demonic.
This is why, btw, Nero is rather ??? at camp when people actually ask him if he's a demon. HE KIND OF TAKES IT AS A GIVEN.
LET'S TALK GIRLFRIEND. AND APPING.
I like Kyrie. I'm SURE THE FANDOM DOESN'T so I'm just stating it there. It took me THREE PLAYS OF THE GAME TO LIKE HER. But I do!
But there is a problem. And that problem is that she has no dialog.
And really that's it. The thing about Kyrie that makes her UNLIKABLE to start isn't so much anything she does it's just that she never talks. It's REALLY HARD to not get the impression that Capcom was like "HE NEEDS TO BE DRIVEN BY LOVE1!!! THROW IN A GIRLFRIEND" and then. forgot she was in the game entirely. She's actually in a fair number of scenes! But after the start of the game she has NO DIALOG until the very end, and neither have much.
BUT THERE IS HOPE. For the key to loving Kyrie is to remember that lack of talking is also a character trait. AND IF YOU LOOK AT IT THAT WAY she has incredibly strong personality! |D To be perfectly fair, outside of that one time where she backed away after finding Nero beating up Credo, she really isn't silent at any points where she NEEDS to talk. Yes. She could. She could totally jesus speech a lot! But does she NEED to? Why? Nero loves her. Nero's going to save her. Nothing she can say is going to change that. So if you're the type of character that doesn't speak when nothing needs to be said, then she's very solidly THAT. And so to me that's how she IS and now I love her as much for the silence as I would for the jesus speeches.
LACK OF DIALOG ASIDE. She does and doesn't do a number of things I liked the first time. Dragging her boyfriend his HUGE SWORD in it's HUGE SWORD CASE and telling him "She longs for your touch" is pretty awesome. So is being completely zen about Nero killing things around her. Like seriously. At the end of the game he fires a bullet off NEAR HER HEAD, WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO KISS AND HER EYES ARE CLOSED. That would kind of you know. Make most people jump. She doesn't even flinch. And then she just stands there for the end credits waiting for Nero to finish killing things |D The enemies have to get REALLY CLOSE before she bothers to seem afraid of them. In her TRUSTING JESUS WAY she's pretty goddamn hardcore. POSSIBLY BECAUSE HER BROTHERS ARE AMAZING DEMON KILLERS.
There's also the whole fact that their relation is a mix of friend/lover/sibling and she doesn't seem to have any issues with kissing someone raised as her brother. Oh, and she doesn't seem very alarmed by having a huge sword shoved against her throat either. ON ONE HAND it would be fun to see her react to stuff. On the other hand, lack of reaction is also personality and character. And NERO ADORES HER so I thus love her too. Nothing less would be right.
SO. IS SHE APPABLE?
Technically. Yes. We have characters in camp with less dialog and less screen time. There's no reason she wouldn't be appable. PRACTICALLY? I don't know. Would anyone love her that much? She's not the type of character I could play at all, specifically DUE to her lack of stuff, so I probably won't be raping anyone into apping her. I would WELCOME a Kyrie gladly, provided someone genuinely wished to play her, but I'm not holding my breath to see one until we get more canon (I AM holding my breath for a DMC4 manga).
The only noteworthy thing is that until Kyrie is in camp Nero won't ever really be okay with anything. He will fade in out and of DESPERATELY NEED TO MAKE SURE SHE IS OKAY mode, but he's physically incapable of getting past the fact that she isn't where he can protect her, and with the Order GONE and Credo dead, he can't even hold out hope that someone else is keeping an eye on her. HE WILL FAIRLY REGULARLY FLIP THE FUCK OUT and once in a while completely break down. The fact that camp doesn't allow him even a way to MOVE FORWARD to get CLOSER to protecting her makes it even worse. SO. IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE WHO WOULD LIKE TO APP KYRIE. your boyfriend loves you )=

He's Vergil reincarnated. Seems to be the fandom favorite. He DOES summon and repair Yamato, but I think you could easily make the argument that any blood of Sparda could do this. Technically it was Sparda's sword first. He also has a BIG BLUE DEMON. It doesn't particularly look like Vergil's Devil Trigger or like Nelo Angelo, but it's... closer than it would look to Dante's? When he fights in Devil Trigger and uses his guns blue blades are thrown out by the demon, iirc this is similar to one of Vergil's attacks. But considering that Nero's DT is connected to Yamato, that could be a property of the sword. HIS NAME IS NERO. NERO AND NELO IN JAPANESE ARE THE SAME THING. Dante specifically notes that he likes the name. Nero is roughly the right age to have been born shortly after Vergil fell into hell and got possessed. THE DEMON IS VERY VERY VERY ANGRY. MUCH LIKE VERGIL albeit not with Vergil's COLD ANGER but still VERY ANGRY. I crack up every time I use Nero's DT. In my heart of hearts it looks like Vergil just getting pissy at everything and beating them repeatably into the concrete.
ANYWAY, IN CONCLUSION. Fandom likes this idea. You can argue for and against it from pretty much every angle. Nothing is conclusive. I think it's one of the two biggest possibilities, if only for the number of points you can choose to argue about.
He's Sparda reincarnated. I hadn't considered this at all originally, but I don't really buy it. Nero is specifically shown to be weaker than Dante. Not just because Dante is OLDER AND MORE AMAZING but even just compared to Dante of DMC3, he's not as capable of as much awesome. IN DMC3 DANTE RUNS DOWN A 99 STORY TOWER, GETS EATEN BY A GIANT DRAGON, AND CUTS HIS WAY BACK OUT. Nero gets caught by a big statue and Dante has to save him. Even in cutscenes he doesn't do anything remotely on the level of Dante's 'Whee this is fun 8D' shit. I feel that Sparda reincarnated would be more than a demonic arm, and at LEAST as capable of over the top cool amazing things as a younger Dante.
He's Dante's son. THIS IS MY OTHER MAIN IDEA and my personal favorite. Dante has sex with a lot of everything. It's not that hard to get girls preggers, especially since he OBVIOUSLY has demonic super sperm. I find it highly unlikely Dante DOESN'T assume, by this age, that he's accidentally whelped a few brats here and there. I don't think he's intentionally getting a lot of women pregnant and then walking out on them! I think he almost never has sex with the same girl twice, had a LOT of drunken sex during the 15-25 age bracket, and moves around fairly often. While he's REALLY NOT father material anyway, I don't see him walking out on kids so much as never really knowing for sure if they exist, but not caring enough to change his ways until he mellows out a bit around 30. PLUS he's Dante, his kids will clearly be amazing, so if he has any they will be fine.
I DON'T THINK EITHER DANTE OR NERO KNOW IF DANTE IS NERO'S DAD. I think on some level they both suspect. But they can't say for sure. And Nero doesn't HAVE daddy issues, he doesn't need to know, he does have DANTE issues and thus doesn't... WANT to know. He's not gonna go there. If it came up he's just be like "Eh, maybe it's possible, but sure as hell hope not". And for Dante I kind of doubt it's really relevant. He clearly thinks of Nero as FAMILY... in his. Messed up Dante way where he fails at family but still loves them and whether or not he specifically sired Nero is a MYSTERY and one he can probably live with just fine. THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY PEOPLE WITH TEH SPARDA BLOODLINE RUNNING AROUND and no matter how you cut it, Nero would totally remind Dante of himself. Cocky badass brat? Yeah. He's totally adopted, as much as Dante can really adopt anyone.
IN SHORT. In my heart of hearts, Nero is Dante's illegitmate son. But for IC purposes Nero doesn't know, doesn't WANT to know, and while he's probably wondered he is very good at not thinking about it.

And given as Nero is clearly not a FULL demon... he has only a demonic ARM and when he goes into Devil Trigger rather than physically transforming he just gets kind of possessed... I really think Nero is at LEAST third generation demon. It's possible his blood is even more distilled than that.

And after that he considered himself a demon. But TECHNICALLY there's pretty much no way both of his parents were full blood demons, and it's most likely only one was partly a demon. On top of that he only got demony powers he was fully aware of recently. BUT he comes from a very black and white society where DEMONS ARE BAD. He ACCEPTED becoming a demon in order to achieve power and the ability to protect Kyrie. Thus he won't nitpick people and explain his humanity, and hell he might even correct them. To HIM being a demon is a path he chose. I won't say he doesn't have a few LINGERING ISSUES but for the most part he's entirely cool with it. FOR TWO REASONS. A) Dante is a demon and Dante is amazing. And as much as Nero is all >\ about Dante, he's still totally his padawan in a surly teenager way. Dante (plus, you know. SPARDA. and Sparda's blood and so on) proves that demons CAN be totally okay. Nero himself will be pretty equally open minded about it in camp. And B) KYRIE ACCEPTED HIM. Nero has NO FRIENDS and NO ONE ELSE HE REALLY CARES ABOUT so as long as Kyrie is okay with him being a demon he doesn't give two shits if the rest of you have issues with it |D

I DON'T THINK EITHER DANTE OR NERO KNOW IF DANTE IS NERO'S DAD. I think on some level they both suspect. But they can't say for sure. And Nero doesn't HAVE daddy issues, he doesn't need to know, he does have DANTE issues and thus doesn't... WANT to know. He's not gonna go there. If it came up he's just be like "Eh, maybe it's possible, but sure as hell hope not". And for Dante I kind of doubt it's really relevant. He clearly thinks of Nero as FAMILY... in his. Messed up Dante way where he fails at family but still loves them and whether or not he specifically sired Nero is a MYSTERY and one he can probably live with just fine. THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY PEOPLE WITH TEH SPARDA BLOODLINE RUNNING AROUND and no matter how you cut it, Nero would totally remind Dante of himself. Cocky badass brat? Yeah. He's totally adopted, as much as Dante can really adopt anyone.
IN SHORT. In my heart of hearts, Nero is Dante's illegitmate son. But for IC purposes Nero doesn't know, doesn't WANT to know, and while he's probably wondered he is very good at not thinking about it.
He's Vergil's son. AS EX-VERGIL-MUN SAID. WHO WOULD HE HAVE SEX WITH? There is a possibly he was at some point drugged and raped I suppose. But otherwise I. I don't see how. (BUT IT WOULD BE AMAZING IF IT WERE TRUE AND I WOULDN'T OBJECT AT ALL)
He's Sparda's son. Sparda is never, iirc, specifically said to be dead. he's just mysteriously missing whenever the world needs saving lately and no one has seen him for 2,000 years even tho he totally had kids like fourty years ago. PRESUMABLY he could totally be wandering around the world, knocking up bitches. But given as Nero is NEVER called a son of Sparda, just someone carrying Sparda's blood. And given as Nero is clearly not a FULL demon... he has only a demonic ARM and when he goes into Devil Trigger rather than physically transforming he just gets kind of possessed... I really think Nero is at LEAST third generation demon. It's possible his blood is even more distilled than that.
He's not directly related to any of the main cast but is the son of some OTHER sons/(daughters?) of Sparda, also wandering the globe and whelping young ones. What it says. This is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE but rather boring so I have nothing to say on it really. CONSIDERING THAT DMC LOEV INCEST I really doubt they are super distantly related. AFTER ALL. WHY. WHEN HE COULD BE DANTE'S SON OR VERGIL REINCARNATED?
Nero is, technically speaking. Only part demon. He considered himself human up until his arm changed and he got POSSESSION AND VOICES AND MORE SUPER POWERS. And after that he considered himself a demon. But TECHNICALLY there's pretty much no way both of his parents were full blood demons, and it's most likely only one was partly a demon. On top of that he only got demony powers he was fully aware of recently. BUT he comes from a very black and white society where DEMONS ARE BAD. He ACCEPTED becoming a demon in order to achieve power and the ability to protect Kyrie. Thus he won't nitpick people and explain his humanity, and hell he might even correct them. To HIM being a demon is a path he chose. I won't say he doesn't have a few LINGERING ISSUES but for the most part he's entirely cool with it. FOR TWO REASONS. A) Dante is a demon and Dante is amazing. And as much as Nero is all >\ about Dante, he's still totally his padawan in a surly teenager way. Dante (plus, you know. SPARDA. and Sparda's blood and so on) proves that demons CAN be totally okay. Nero himself will be pretty equally open minded about it in camp. And B) KYRIE ACCEPTED HIM. Nero has NO FRIENDS and NO ONE ELSE HE REALLY CARES ABOUT so as long as Kyrie is okay with him being a demon he doesn't give two shits if the rest of you have issues with it |D
