Why isn’t keeping teens entertained easy?

Currently: Planning yet another excursion to the grocery store. Only my second visit this week!

I guess I really shouldn’t complain now that mine are at the age where they like to sleep constantly. But when they are not sleeping they’re eating, and when they’re not eating, they’re on their X box until they literally burn themselves out on it. Then it comes: “I’m bored.”

I immediately think, “You’re kidding me, right?” What with our forty premium channels, extended cable, a multitude of dvds, books to read, football and baseball, the kids are BORED? I can sort of understand. I have all these same things NOW, and I still find myself getting bored of it all from time to time. But seriously….all these wonderful things back when I was their age would have been sheer gluttony.

So, in yet another futile attempt to relieve my children’s boredom, I suggested we watch Celebrity Circus. Did anyone else watch that? Well, anyone else who will actually admit to it? I love circus performances and stunts, so I definitely wanted to check it out. I just couldn’t get very into it, though. Maybe I will like it better as the weeks roll on and they perform more difficult stunts. Either that, or I am straight up burned out on ‘celeb reality’.

We spent a good portion of the evening flipping between that and The Perfect Storm. I really like that movie. I like weather, I like the ocean, and I even like Mark Wahlberg. The kids like action, and are huge fans of Deadliest Catch. It was a good compromise for all of us. Even though I have seen this movie numerous times before, I still found myself becoming so terrified for the characters. I’d hate to ever find myself out in the middle of the ocean, in the cold and dark, during a storm where gigantic waves overtook my boat several times. Being in a bigger, sturdy boat would be bad enough, but can you imagine having to get in one of those rescue-type inflatable boats during such a storm because your boat capsized? That would be way too much of a thrill ride for me!

As for the kids? The movie held their attention better than Celebrity Circus, but still didn’t alleviate their boredom. The only thing that seems to do that sometimes is roughhousing and getting loud like a bunch of five year olds!

As I said before, though…I really shouldn’t complain. Mine do sleep a lot. In fact, one is asleep now after being up all night last night. I don’t plan on disturbing him, either. He needs to get his sleep schedule back on track as soon as possible, so I am letting him sleep as long as he can. Then he can be up in the morning and hopefully start getting back to normal.
