I’m up LATE doing this, because I know most of you folks out there like to read your blogs first thing in the morning! I really wish I could come up with something better than ‘weekend wrapup’ for a title, but that’s basically all this is.
Well, the china cabinet I went nuts over came Friday morning! But I was too busy Friday thrifting during the day to get it ready and blog about it. Then I worked concessions for the local high school ball game that night. I actually loved it! It was so much fun, and I was so worn out. I think I am working again in two weeks, but I’m not sure. I love that I am meeting so many new and interesting people because of my children’s extracurricular activities. People know and recognize me and my children. I am one of the parents I always hoped I’d be: hanging out with my kids, watching them play sports and do other important activities, helping out with the other moms and dads, going to different meetings, etc. I still may not fit in as if I grew up here, but I really like it here. This is such a welcome change, because for a long time, I felt really out of place here. Now I know that I am exactly where I am supposed to be at this point in my life.
Once I got the china cabinet, I had to really clean and rearrange my dining room. And give the cabinet itself a thorough cleaning and polishing, and put the legs and doors on. Turns out it might not be so old after all; it has a pressboard back, and my husband said that wasn’t used on furniture in the 50s. I concede that he is probably right on this one. I’m not sure when the piece was made, but you have to admit it does look pretty old. And I don’t care if it was made last year or something, it’s still a great fit for the look I am going for in my home. AND IT WAS ONLY $62.50!!! I thought it was a steal at $125! Of course, I had to pay to have it delivered, but still….I came out way better than buying a retro reproduction or new cabinet.
Here’s a better photo of it than the one I took with the phone cam before I bought it:
We had just gotten it moved. Please try to ignore the mess on the dining room table beside it.
And here it is with some of my pretties inside:
I tried to display one piece of each type of pattern I have, but there just isn’t room for all of it. The plan is to rotate the dishes out every week when I dust. I’ve posted pics of most of the dishes that are displayed before, so I won’t do that again. But I do want to show off my latest finds, just in case you can’t see them really well in the pics:
Cute little ‘Green Field’ salad plate from Homer Laughlin. $0.22. I already have a matching saucer.
Empress China dinner plate. 2 @ $0.40 each. ‘Lucinda’ pattern. Both plates had chips, but the one shown here on the left is the biggest/worst. I don’t care; I’ll still use them!
$0.40. Unidentified pattern. Not sure if it’s vintage or not, but it’s shaped like some of my other coupe style vintage plates.
Franciscan dinner plate. $0.40. ‘Autumn’ pattern. Lots of utensil marks and a pretty big chip. Again, I don’t care; I’ll use it. I was so giddy over finding a Franciscan piece at that price!
But that’s not all…..
I also found this Iroqois/Ben Seibel serving bowl! $0.40. ‘Impromptu’ pattern or line. Has a tiny ‘flea bite’ under the rim on one side, and a very small line of discoloration due to crazing. But it’s still very usable, and I love the shape!
AND……
One of my favorite patterns, Salem’s ‘North Star’….
$0.38. I nearly squealed when I saw it!
I was also a very happy camper Friday because, in addition to my china cabinet being delivered, my two ebay purchases came in! I could not resist this partial place setting of Hazel Atlas ‘Ovide’ in pink and black:
$7.99.
Since I also collect vintage glass bakeware and serving pieces, I got this adorable Pyrex pie plate in Flamingo Pink for $3.99:
Oh, and I *did* finally get my dining room rearranged:
I really hate that wallpaper border, and my dinette set. That’ll hopefully be the next thing I replace! As for the wallpaper, I’d yank it down and paint….if only I could decide what color I’d like! I have some artwork that needs to go up in there as well.
And that’s how I spent my weekend. That, and wiping my google reader out. It had just become way too overwhelming to look at! And re-subbing to my favorite blogs. And reading. And commenting on some of them. And cooking. And cleaning. Never-ending laundry. Oh, and yard work. And watching the Rock of Love reunion. Boy, was that disappointing.
I do have a pretty busy week ahead!
