An orphan of indeterminate ethnicity, Adam Apostle like so many was never adopted out of the orphanage during the tough times of the depression. Growing up on the mean streets of New York, he became a jack-of-all-trades, doing any work he could to help support the orphanage, and later his poor but hard-working neighborhood. His first love, however, was acting, but due to his long hours working to get by he never had time to make it any further than community theater. A rise in ethnic/gang violence sweeps through the city, catching Adam and his best girl on a rare night out on the town during which he plans to propose. In the ensuing violence his fiance-to-be is shot and paralyzed from the waist down, becoming a reclusive shut-in who refuses to marry him and 'tie him down to a useless wreck'. Soon after while getting into costume for a play he gets called out to take care of some repair work on the roof of one of the buildings he is superintendent of, as the sun sets he sees one of the scoundrels who shot his girl down below engaged in another act of villainy, swooping down by rope and using the tools he had on hand he defeats the thugs, then races off into the night for fear that if his identity is known the gangs will retaliate on his friends and neighbors. The news the next day speak of his 'costumed heroics' and how the different ethnic neighborhoods are trying to claim him as one of their own, representing the best of what it means to be a New Yorker. He takes it as a sign, and becomes Mr. Manhattan, a quick-change/disguise artist jack-of-all-trades turned superhero, picking costumes and gadgets/tools that represent various aspects of New York culture in an effort to be an example and bring people together while stopping the violence. A sort of toned down/semi-realistic version of The Mask, but with a more human theme.
