i kid you NOT -- cartoon characters named "Panty" and "Garterbelt" !!
There are two young women on LJ, one calls herself Momogirl http://momogirl12345.livejournal.com/ -- and her pal is named Pimmy. I somehow friended with Momo a while back; they seem to have a whole Japanese anime thing going -- but it's a parody, BUT a very straight-faced parody.
They have a new post (gigantic, probably breaking whatever rules there are for length and complexity of posts). It is an ARCH critical essay on "My Little Pony, "an animated TV show for 8-year-old girls...
The illustrated essay is quite legit-seeming...
So I looked around, eventually finding comments from their acquaintances, as puzzled about the girls' seeming obsession as I am. Kidding about how tooth-rottingly sweet it all was!
And then I find on Pimmy's LJ a weird sex angle --
"...[We] watched the first episode of 'Panty and Stocking' today. It was not as bad as people made me fear it was. It didn't even feel like an adult swim [?] cartoon. The humor is clearly Japanese, I think anyone who complains about the sex/gross humor doesn't actually realize what is supposed to be the joke... I gotta say, Stocking is adorable. I thought I'd dislike her, but I really don't! Panty is awesome too. Garterbelt is pretty cool as well. I love watching Panty and Stocking interact, their relationship isn't entirely based on archetypes [sic!] ..."
