Watched the Oscars last night, and thought the rolling references to last year's fuck-up (Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway -- the immortal "Bonnie & Clyde" -- announcing the wrong winner) were hilarious. Deliberately having the same vintage stars (W&F/"B&C") back this year, doing the same "best picture" gig, WAS tempting Fate. And then the terrific writer and director Guillermo del Toro ad-libbing when he won the same category... well, it turned out to be as good as it GETS!
Sometimes the egregiously self-promoting "Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences" actually does something right. The sweetly sarcasic del Toro and his amazing film, "The Shape of Water," truly deserved the award.
Del Toro's movie was a brilliant evocation of the Cold War 50s -- particularly the sinister "bad guy" and his illiberal/inhumane Establishment. They regarded the "fish" hero as a possible weapon against the Russkies, while ONLY the mute cleaning girl accepted him as worthy of love -- risking everything to save his life.
