Mike Dowson -- photographer of women

Sep 21, 2016 00:04

I just spent an hour browsing through the vast Tumblr collection done by a Brit photographer named Dowson. He has also worked extensively in Moscow and elsewhere around the world.

Rather as I recently did with another collector (http://devifemme.livejournal.com/2103871.html), I plunged into Mike's stunning mix of moods, styles, locales -- and, of course, his several hundred different models from every continent and many cultures. Some shots are rather more explicit than I enjoy; also, no lesbian pairings whatsoever. (Damn! That'd have been cool, Mike!)

I came away with about 80 shots* I especially liked, fairly representative of his tremendous range -- and sometimes varied takes of a given girl in a particular outfit. (I told myself I'd combine a few tomorrow as great separate LJ posts.)

So that reduces my distinct "likes" to about 60. On the other hand, Mike also enjoys displaying some of his shots in sequences from 3-4 to upwards of a dozen "related" (at least in his own mind) photos. For various reasons, I deliberately chose few out of the many sequences he offers -- among other things, he sneaks some incredibly NSFW stuff into otherwise elegant and unprovocative chains. (Which is, of course, his privilege completely. I'm in awe of his entire body of work!).

Mike scatters puzzles and diversions throughout his Tumblr. For one, he LIKES a curious title, "A girl is a gun" -- I've Googled, but it's not a book** of his photos. http://ultradevi.tumblr.com/post/150709147082/anuglybeauty-wwwmikedowsoncom-julia-nefedova (Likewise, I've no idea what, if anything, "anuglybeauty" refers to.)

Tomorrow, I'll serve up a few separate posts with varied takes of individual models, as well as with some of what, to me, are his best sequences.

Oh, yeah, a good interview -- http://www.c-heads.com/2013/08/06/a-talk-with-mike-dowson-nsfw/

** It was an early-70s film, and a New Orleans boutique (now closed, per YELP) but I see nothing related to Mike -- other than appearing on several of his photos.
