"The Oscar for best lesbian in a non-lesbian motion picture goes to... "

After writing a couple of days ago about the new Ghostbusters flick, inspired by gay bloggers' insights into the movie, I was keen to see it -- and we did so yesterday. And it was fabulous. SNL's Kate McKinnon (who is an out gay) played her lezzie character to the hilt. Throughout, she flirted equally with the audience and with the brilliant Kristen Wiig character.

I gotta mention Chris Hemsworth‘s delightful airhead character, Kevin, who inherited Sigourney Weaver's sexy character in the original Ghostbusters. He, in effect, completes the gender reversals in the new movie -- the character who get inhabited by the ghosts. He gets to be as outrageous as Kate's over-the-top character.

Alas, I cannot say anything positive about Bill Murray's silly-ass cameo, despite him being one of my favorite actors (not least for his delicious part in the original Ghostbusters). Here, he just looked uncomfortable; his character seemed to be an afterthought by director Paul Feig. Likewise, Sigourney herself made a too-brief appearance at the end of the movie.

BTW I just read After Ellen's terrific piece on the movie -- http://www.afterellen.com/movies/495321-sorry-sony-kate-mckinnons-character-definitely-queer-ghostbusters It emphasizes Feig's difficult balancing act with Sony Pictures as he created McKinnon's groundbreaking role -- a lesbian playing a lesbian in a "summer blockbuster" movie, trying to be all things to all people WORLDWIDE. (So much of Hollywood's calculations these days being precisely how global markets will react to its product...)

lezzie possibilities, movie, dyke, damsel in distress
