My time in my favorite place comes to a close once again. As usual, I'm a bit torn: we're going on a nifty Scandinavian cruise for much of June, and there seem to be Washington commitments shaping up in July and beyond, so it'll be a good while until I'm back. I don't fly up until Friday, but am already saying goodbye to various friends.
Just got back from lunch with several, in a place well into Florida's interior, a 105-year-old town called Fellsmere -- it's a farming area opened by extensive dredging early in the Twentieth Century.
Vero wasn't here yet, though the East Coast Railway came through our then-remote county. A spur railroad went from Sebastian on the coast to the town, hauling out the farm produce. Anyhow, the massive and ornate headquarters of the Fellsmere Development Corp., built back then, has been turned into a restaurant called Marsh's Landing. We get out there a few times a year for a great meal, and today was no exception. Not too crowded, despite the holiday.
Despite some rain last week, the weather has been cooperative and I've got in some nice beach time. It was beautiful for a late-afternoon block party last Thursday, under a big oak on the edge of our property. Got about thirty people for beer and bratwurst.
