Good old Peanuts! Always fun to see these vintage strips -- it says something charming about the US that this creative genius, the late Charles Schulz working 40-50 years ago (OMG such a different time!), is still widely ( Read more... )

Ever flown through Santa Rosa, CA? Charles M. Schultz international airport. There's peanuts statues all over town and once a year people go around and take pictures of them all and try to get every one. It's kinda neat.

Not the airport, but I have been in SR -- even visiting the Schultz Museum, which is wonderful. There's also the ice-skating rink -- seems he liked hockey...

And I'm guessing you're young, and that this is your first time through the collection. To my (aging) mind, the best way is to see them daily in the newspaper (the Washington Post has TWO full pages of comics, including current and a few oldies -- including Doonesbury, which I worship as I do Peanuts!).

Wasn't there a movie version of PEANUTS recently? I recall someone saying that the Schulz family had made sure that, despite the 3D style animation, they had made sure that the film reflected the ethos of the original strip.

I'm not really sure how many of the newspaper strips that I read as a kid are still being published, as some of them are simply being reprinted by the newspapers in order to fill out the space. There was one called GARTH, which was an adventure strip in the DAILY MIRROR. The original, when it was being drawn by the great Frank Bellamy, often had female nudity. When they were reprinted in book form the ladies were all covered up, which always struck me as weird.
