Developed several decades ago on Rio beaches, it derives not from soccer but rather volleyball. Since it uses the soccer “no hands” rule, it’s called “fut-volei” (pronounced “foo-chi-volley” since Brazilians don’t like words to end in consonants, adding them when not there; Fords are “For-gees”).
