Ryan for Speaker?

The Washington Post's resident Republican (a rare sane conservative), Michael Gerson, today writes about Paul Ryan's prospects. He says he's "tested the thickness of the political ice" and -- mixed metaphor-- is all set to rumble.

"...Given the nature of the Republican coalition (in parts fractious, restless and heedless of political reality), he will end up in the water. But perhaps not immediately, and perhaps not until after considerable accomplishment."

Gerson calls it the "Ryan test -- give me a meaningful job with a reasonable prospect of... success and a shot at personal happiness or leave me the hell alone...

"Mainstream conservatives saw Ryan as the best chance, maybe the only chance, to unite their fractious party."

Me, I'm back to enjoying the antics of the House GOP's Death Wish Caucus -- those forty yahoos (no aspersion on the Internet firm!) who can't accept their erstwhile leaders' approach to their task. Ted Cruz (who's one of them) says earlier House GOP leadership (inept right-wingers like Boehner and McCarthy) "reflexively surrenders on every issue" (sic). "The 40" (who actually are unified on very little) cannot abide the meat and bread of serious politics -- compromise. And they're setting up the GOP to lose big in 2016.

But, damn! We ARE a serious country, yet we're stuck with a Congress good only for bad jokes on the Daily Show! I hope Ryan can shame, threaten or beat "The 40 Thieves" into submission -- at least enough to get to the 2016 elections without defaulting on the debt or shutting down the Gummint (again!)...
