I'm confused about this whole thing. So...we were against Assad, because he was nerve gassing (or bio/chem) his people. We were for the rebels. Now, we are for Assad, because the rebels have allied with ISIS? Is that the case or am I completely missing something?
Hold it, K -- we are emphatically NOT for Assad; that's the RUSSIANS. We seem to have flirted for a day or two with the idea Putin would oblige us by easing him out. That was a non-starter -- and a bit embarrassing. (But the IDEA wasn't bad; we simply cannot trust Putin to do ANYTHING we might want.)
And the non-Islamist rebels AREN'T "allied with ISIS." They're getting blasted by the Russians AND by ISIS. The really awful thing is that the UN-brokered ceasefire that had been nurtured by us AND the non-Islamist rebels was blithely swept off the table by the Russians.
