There's nothing worse than reneged promises

Yesus Motherfu**ing Christ!

Y'know sometimes it really is not worth standing up for what you believe in.

Case in point. Yesterday i had agreed for a friend of mine to take my last night shift so that I could spend the evening of Rosh Hashanah with my family having the traditional New Year meal. The fact that I should have NEVER been put on the nightshift in the first place on that day is irrelevant but I digress.

So I work the 3 nights and yesterday morning I prepared to go through the post-night ritual of sleeping very little in order to re-acclimatise my body back to sleeping at night. This means I get about 2-3 hours sleep, get up at noon and stagger through the day with the reward of sleeping on the forthcoming night.

I then get a text at 17.10pm telling me that the person who had arranged to cover my nights has been denied by the line manager.
I almost passed out as I felt the bottom drop out of my world.

Cue frantic phone calls to relevant parties telling them that I can't do nights given the fact that I've only had around 2 hours sleep.

I then do what any sane person would do in this position.
Drive to parent's house and burst into tears.

I finally get a call from my friend who says they will just let the shift go ahead with only 2 people (there's only 3 on nights anyway) which will give them the right about to work a case should one arise and that's that.
I agree but I'm still not happy and to my misfortune the situation does taint the meal somewhat.
What a way to start New Year.

In hindsight I admit this is my fault for trusting work.

My first mistake was not booking New Year off, although I never believed anyone would put the only practicing Jew on the theatre staff on nightshift on Rosh Hashanah.
But I guess these new sisters don't pay any attention to such things as religious festivals.

The second mistake I made was to assume that the pre-planned theatre nightshift rota would be honoured under this new regime. It wasn't. They claimed they didn't know anything about it. And I was the only person available to work nights that week.

2 mistakes.
Ones I will not be making again i can assure you of that.

No doubt I will have to speak to these people when I return to work in a week's time.
But considering I have friends both in the union as well as the Bristol Progressive Jewish Congregation in my corner I'm not sure what the outcome of this meeting will be.
My friend in Brighton reckons that it's UK LAW for anyone Jewish to be legally entitled to holiday for the High Holy Days.
I'm not sure about that in all fairness but....
this does act as another nail in the coffin for me in this current job.

Which is a real shame but what can you do?

jewish stuff, new year, work, sadness
