What a palava.
Long story still kinda long we have touched down in the flat. And it is shiny, and rapidly becoming home in a New York tenement kinda way, including ethnic minority neighbours, screaming babies and yowling cats. All I need now is a bit of immigrant fiction on the bookshelves and a NYC rug and I'm sorted.
Beside the fact that we don't currently have internet or teevee - you really miss it when it's gone - we are coping well, and I'm enjoying the whole 'walking to work' thing. Whether I enjoy it in the pissing rain is another question, but at least I have a chance to get changed when I get into work, it's not like my wet clothes are gonna stay on me for any length of time, not with the shifts I do.
Speaking of that the last week was positively ball-breaking.
After being told I have to take my official day off as the bank holiday i work 4 shifts in a row and the last 2 are giant-killers of the worst kind compounded by the fact that we have no staff to cover the lists really. Friday was better admittedly because although i was dying on my feet and had reached a level of not-caring hitherto unreached I was teamed with my friend D who also happens to be the head of the hospital union.
She took no shit off the managers and demanded a 3rd member of staff as only a union boss can demand. And we still stopped the list for 30 mins while we could have our lunchbreak. Ha!! Power to the people baby, power to the people!
Tonight I go on the night shift for 3 nights so I'm hoping it's going to be nice and chilled and easy. Not quiet cos then I'll fall asleep but just steady, and nothing to do after 3am. That would be nice. Extra Southmead staff wouldn't go amiss either.
A very kind goyim in work has agreed to swap my last night on the thursday so that I will do their shift further on down the road and I can have Thursday daytime off. In all fairness I probably won't attend service given the fact that I will have rolled into bed at 7.30am that day and if the night is horrendous I will be in my bed for quite a while after. But it does mean I can have the meal with the family that evening without having to clock-watch and pout over the fact i have to leave and go to work again. This is good.
And I get friday off to pack and get some new headphones for the iPod before we all fly to New York on Saturday morning for 5 days.
I have lists of things to buy for my friends in work, from ciggs to candy bars to choc chips to fridge magnets to purple body gel.
I'm hoping to see The Mexican Suitcase exhibition while I'm there too.
But for now I'm surviving, I'm getting enough to eat, keeping my room and the flat as tidy as I can work considered. And not killing my flatmate's cat that keeps wanting to get into my room every night for the past week. She's contributing to my trouble due to my sleep deprivation. One can only hope she improves..
