Daniel stood in the middle of Betty’s living room and stared. He’d never seen anything like it. Tilting his head, he leaned to the side to check out the rest of it. It was the most...festive thing he’d ever seen. And it was ugly, too.

Clearing his throat, he straightened his posture and looked toward the stairs when Betty came down, carrying her boots in her arms. He looked at her and then gestured in front of him.

“Your tree. It’s...pink,” he commented, acting like Betty didn’t know she had a pink Christmas tree in her living room.

“Hm? Yeah. The other one caught on fire. I told you that,” Betty said while she dropped her boots to the floor and put them on. “We lost a lot of ornaments, too.”

Daniel raised his eyebrows and looked at the tree again. “It’s kind of ugly and--.” He stopped and jerked his head toward Betty. “Some of the ornaments burned? Was my stocking saved?”

Pursing her lips, Betty thought for a moment and shook her head. “No,” she said. She zipped up her coat and moved toward the front door. When she realized Daniel was still standing in the living room, she turned to get him. “Come on. We can’t be late. Alexis will kill us.”

“But shouldn’t we stay here so I can make a new stocking?”

“Did you make the last stocking?”

“No,” Daniel answered. “Justin did. Okay, well, shouldn’t we stay here so Justin can make a new stocking?”

Betty sighed and threw her hands up. “Daniel! Stop staring at my ugly Christmas tree and lets go! You promised Alexis you’d be there,” she said. She reached over and grabbed the sleeve of Daniel’s jacket. “Come on!”

Daniel found himself being yanked out of the living room by Betty, while his eyes never left the tree. It really was ugly.

It was a few days before Christmas and Betty was sleeping soundly in her bed. The sun was just beginning to peek through her curtains when she was woke up to Hilda’s screams. Bolting up, Betty jumped out of bed and put her robe and pink bunny slippers on, and rushed out of her room.

“What’s wrong?” she asked when she got to the living room.

“Someone broke into our house and took our tree!” Hilda exclaimed, her arms flailing around. “And they replaced it with that!”

Betty turned around and gasped. Hilda was right - the pink tree was gone but it’d been replaced by another tree; one that was decked out in every ornament known to mankind. And it was beautiful.

Stepping closer, Betty eyed the tree, stopping when she noticed something red on the side of it. It was a stocking. A very badly made stocking, but it was a stocking nonetheless. She reached out and traced the name on the top. It was from Daniel.

“Who’s it from?” Hilda asked.

“Daniel,” Betty said with a smile.

“The same Daniel that’s about to get mauled by the neighbor’s poodle?” Ignacio asked while motioning toward the front window.

Betty gasped and quickly ran to the front door. She threw it open and motioned for Daniel to come inside. He hurried up the front steps and got inside right before Betty shut the door behind him.

“Thanks,” he said. “Never knew a little dog like that could be so mean.” He looked down at the small bite marks on his shoes and shook his head.

“Yeah. She’s really mean,” Betty said before shuffling her feet. “Thank you for the tree. It’s beautiful. Especially your stocking.”

“It’s the least I could I do,” Daniel said. His eyes ticked up and then he leaned forward and placed a small kiss on Betty’s cheek.

Betty’s eyes went wide from the show of affection and she stumbled back. “What was that for?” she asked, while Daniel pointed up. She looked up and saw the mistletoe hanging from the door frame. “You put that there?”

“Justin taught me strategically placed mistletoe are the best.”

Grinning, Betty touched her cheek and nodded. “Smart kid,” she said before she motioned behind her. “Want to come in and have some breakfast? Or would you rather stand here all day?”

“Hmm, I don’t know,” Daniel said before he took a step forward. When Betty took a step back, he chuckled. “Stand still. Please.”

“Okay,” Betty said while dumbly nodding.

Taking another step forward, Daniel smiled when Betty didn’t move. He tucked his fingers under her chin and tilted her face toward him. Leaning down, he pressed his lips against hers and kissed her for several moments.

When they pulled apart, Daniel sighed. “I think this should become a new tradition. I buy you a tree and you kiss me under the mistletoe,” he said.

“I-I think so, too,” Betty murmured, her cheeks flushed. “I think it’d be a wonderful tradition.”

Daniel grinned and bounced on the balls of his feet. “Now for breakfast,” he said.

“Yeah, breakfast,” Betty said. Reaching down, she took Daniel’s hand and led him inside.
