One might ask me, "why, in this day and age, do you still carry a sword?". I would, in all truth, probably laugh and brush the question off... If the person was a mortal that I didn't know I could trust. However, I do have an answer. I carry my sword to show my pride. It does sound a bit vain, doesn't it? Hm-hm. Of course it does.
Do I care that it sounds vain? Eh, no.
Another question could be, "what does a sword represent, in your words?". Ah, now that's an intelligent question. To me a sword represents the person for whom it was meant for. Their pride. Their chivalry. Their courage, honor, bravery, morality, skill, loyalty, compassion, spirit, and even their very soul.
A sword can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. It is a weapon. It is a tool.
Long ago a sword was one of the few weapons of war, along with spears and arrows. Only a master could wield a blade to its fullest capacity. I will admit, I was never very good with a blade. Firearms were my skill. My father hoped I would get better with swords, but when he saw how good I was with firearms, he accepted that instead. Though, really, in that day and age, which was really more impressive, winning a swordfight, or hitting a three inch wide target from one hundred yards with a smoothbore musket?
I'm leaning toward the musket.
In my life, I have seen swords go from combat weapons to decorations. Swords were in their last death rolls when I was young. Firearms were already beginning to take over back then. Muskets, pistols, cannons... Swordfighters were a dieing breed. It is funny to think though that in a way, a descendant of the sword is still used in combat.
Can you guess what that descendant it?
If you guessed: the bayonette, then you're right.
Bayonettes evolved from their ancestors. There is something in the human subconscious that identifies a sword, or a blade, no matter how small, with power. Blades have struck fear into the human heart, and inspired it to fight at the same time. A sword means survival of the species.
Vampires and Lycans have kept the sword alive in other ways though.
To us, they are still weapons.
To us, they are still power.
To us, they are our lives.
A sword, a sword!
I cry my Lord!
Please God, heed my word!
A sword makes me!
It preserves my soul!
Let all who hear me, know this now!
A sword protects,
A sword destoys,
A sword allows,
A sword denies,
It always will,
And that is fine,
But without one,
What soul have I?
A Sword,
