Judgment-Deviant Muse Prompt

"Do not dare judge me, Mercèdès, for you have no idea what I’ve been through." The Count of Monte Cristo says to a terrified Mercèdès who had just figured out that he was her once beloved Edmond Dantès.

Shaking, Mercèdès says softly, "Edmond...Edmond, please. Don’t hate me, for I could never hate you. I love you. I only judge you because..."

"Love..." He says as he shakes his head in disgust. "And was it the same love that you had for me that you had for Fernand? Fernand, the man who betrayed me and yet you married a whole few months after I was gone? Fernand, who took my place in your heart and your bed? Fernand, my once cherished best friend? Was it love then?"

"You don’t understand, I had to marry him. You weren’t here and I was desperate. I never meant to betray you like you have done to me."

"I only betrayed you because you broke my heart. You broke my world, Mercèdès, and that is why I am the man that you see before you. I am a broken and cold-hearted man now and it is because of you and you alone. There might have been a chance to save me…but you broke that."

"Edmond, please don’t. There are reasons for why I married him. I never loved him, Edmond. I never cared about him but he was there and he wanted to protect me. I had to go to him because of…because of my son, Albèrt. Your son, Edmond. Albèrt is your son."

The Count stumbles back away from her as she tells him this news. His eyes flash with so many dark emotions now all turned towards Fernand. "He...betrayed me and then took you as his bride because of his jealousy and then he took in my son as his own..." He says this mostly for himself as if he is piecing together a great puzzle.

Mercèdès comes closer to him and puts her hands tentatively on his chest, "Edmond, I...I had to save my name. I couldn’t be shunned in society by having a bastard son of a traitor as they all thought. He was there...and...he could pay for...everything. Please, forgive me and your son."

The Count looks down at Mercèdès before he kisses her cheek gently. Then he says, "Don’t worry, Mercèdès. My judgment on you has disappeared. My new judgment is completely on Fernand. I know now of what I must do and you also know what I must do. He must die. My judgment is death. Death to repay every sin he has ever committed against me and my family."
