we were going to make it a family affair, but my mother-in-law to be went ahead and voted without ST and i, even though we had made plans to do it together. she's always doing things like that. plans are always consideered contingent until the minute that they happen. i hate that. you can imagine how that colors our holidays. mmmhmmm. as soon as we marry and move, i'll be taking charge of those events, thank you very much.

still, the voting experience was a good one. it was sunday morning at the board of elections and all our fellow poll-goers were cheerful and friendly. there was a lot of grinning at strangers across the room. i guess because we're all getting to do something we've always wanted to do -- vote for somebody that we actually really like (i let out a little yip of triumph when i submitted my electronic ballot, the elderly man in the booth next to mine gave me a kindly tip of his hat). i suppose that seeming unity of purpose is one of the upsides to voting in chicago this time around.

honestly, you walk into a walgreens around here and you can buy a chicago hat or an obama t-shirt. his books are also almost always prominently displayed in the shop front. talk about peer pressure. i look at the polling in illinois and i suspect the vast majority of the 30% who have declared for mccain live downstate.

anyhows here's something else that may interest you:

i received the link to this tale of O the good samaritan in an email from a friend of my mother's. it's apparently a true story, but it nevertheless has the feel of a fable. in any case, it adds to the pro-obama mythos, one of the most effective counters to the anti-obama smears (you'd be surprised how unpersuasive facts are).

daily grind, obama, politico
