It seems to me that what you are describing is Faith. Faith in the future, faith in another person, faith that we matter in some small way. It is a reason to keep going, faith that things will be better. Having a child is an act of faith. Marriage is as well. Believing in something bigger than ourselves, whether it is a relationship, an idea, God or whatever, keeps us going through the dark.
