Doomed

I just went to see the movie "Doom". Despite the fact that it starred Dwayne Johnson, was based on a first-person-shooter video game, and was quite over-hyped, it was a good movie. Sure, it offers no deep plot or surprising twist, but it is a solid movie about shooting things to death. It manages to harness some of the video game series focus on cheeky humor, while changing the plot enough from the latest in the series (Doom 3) to make it a new journey into dangerous territory. At the beginning, I was happy to see Sarge (Johnson) seem to be a well-acted character with good lines and delivery, but the nearer the end of the movie came the worse he was played. Eventually I was rooting for him to die. The movie manages to incorporate some cool technology (namely nano-walls and the Bio Force Gun) and incorporate several "Resident Evil"-esque scenes without seeming too much like a clone. I wish that the acting near the end had been up to the same standards as that near the beginning, but at least the action remains constant. As soon as the action begins to drop or the plot becomes too serious and deep, something jumps out, blows up, or falls down suddenly. There were a few attempts to make the plot serious and give pathos to the characters, but these failed miserably for the most part. The final moments of the movie were nicely action-packed. In my opinion, the two best scenes of the movie were the ones I had figured would be the worst before I watched it. The first scene was the first-person action scene, which played out very much like the computer game. It was rather motion sickness-inducing, but well edited and fun to watch. The second scene occured during the first scene, and that was the fight with the pinky demon. The fact that this had factored into the movie's plot, and into the game's history also, made this fight exceptionally fun to watch. All in all, I give this movie an 8 out of 10. It could have used a better plot, but if you watch it expecting it to be a shooting movie, you'll get what you came for. Also, the animation for the beginning of the end credits was really cool!
