I admire your desire to bake. One time, I tried to make Spekulatius and I think it almost destroyed my soul. The dough is very rich and difficult to deal with, but I am going to try it again this year. Hopefully it won't end in tears like last time (kidding).
I definitely miss the coffee/cookies/cake aspect of Germany. So much so that I just spent $5 on Spekulatius in DC this past weekend (considering it's like, 1E in Germany... haha).
Good luck with the recipes, wish I had something constructive to offer!
Hello! I'm not really your neighbor, I was in town from Philly to see the Caps/Flyers game and make a holy pilgrimage to the house of Ovechkin.
BUT... we stayed at the Holiday Inn at the Ballston stop on the Orange Line. When you get out of the metro, there is a shopping complex about fifty feet from the entrance. I'm not sure of the name of the place, but it's a gourmet store with meats, cheeses, chocolates and baked goods and tons of imported stuff. They have freshly made Mandelhörnchen too, which made my heart sing. I know these are horrible directions, but if you feel like taking a little trip, there would be the place to go.
You can also go to Germandeli.com and order it, or check on Ebay where they have several auctions.
On a separate, non-German related topic, DC is really nice. I hadn't been there in about 5 years. I was pleasantly surprised with the people and the level of cleanliness. Then again, four years in Philadelphia will make a tipped over porta-potty seem like an ideal domicile.
You should start with it cold, and then work with only a small amount at a time, while you leave the rest of the dough in the fridge. At least, this is probably one of those cookies you do that with. (It isn't one I usually make, but if the dough is sticky, that's what you do.)
Totally unrelated random advice: I once used an old family recipe to mix up a batch of Peppfernuesse: I didn't carefully read over the proportions ahead of time, just made sure I had everything. Well, after I'd baked 3 or 4 trays of cookies, and there was still a lot of dough left, I took another look at the recipe. It was using something like 3 or 4 cups of flour! Plus proportionate amounts of everything else... We froze the rest of the dough and probably still have some left to be used this year...
