Hope it's okay I ask a quick German-language question...

I need a spot of help figuring out something. I hope I explain it okay, but if I fail to just tell me to clarify. :D

I'm an American. In American colleges and universities, international students generally have to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to demonstrate their fluency in English before they can be admitted for study; in addition, those immigrants seeking citizenship in America must pass the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) test, which requires a basic ability to communicate in English in order to pass, though it is not, in itself, an English proficiency exam like the TOEFL.

I am curious as to the name of the most common test or tests used to determine German-language proficiency especially for immigrants seeking citizenship, if such a thing is required. If no such test is required for citizenship, then what is the most common German proficiency exam required for prospective university students prior to admission? From what I'm reading here, I gather that either the TestDaF or the Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) may be the test I am looking for, but I would REALLY like input from someone who knows about this sort of thing, either being from Germany or having had to take a German-language proficiency exam for either naturalization or admittance into a German university.

Thank you in advance for any and all help! <3
