Heidelberg homes along "Philosophenweg" (Philosophers' Walk)
Interesting Fact
In 1907, "Heidelberg Man"'s jaw bone was discovered in this area of Germany. It is the earliest evidence of human life in Europe - Heidelberg Man died here about 600,000 years ago.
Philosophers' Walk
On the northern side of the Neckar river, remains of an old Celtic fortress and the Philosophers' Walk (Philosophenweg) can be found. The Walk derives its name from the fact that Heidelberg's famous philosophers and university teachers are said to have once walked and talked here.
And today?
As of 2004, 82% of Heidelberg's population was working in the service sector - primarily catering to tourism. As a relic of Romanticism, the city has been labeled a Romantic Town and attracts 2.5 million visitors each year. Many events are organized to increase said attraction. In spring, the "Heidelberger Frühling" Classic Music Festival and international easter egg market are conducted. In July and August there is the "Heidelberger Castle Festival". On the first Saturday in June and September, and the 2nd Saturday in July - the castle and the old bridge are illuminated with lights and fireworks (about to happen now). The old town autumn festival in September includes a Medieval Market, arts & crafts markets, a flea market and music ranging from Samba to Rock. During advent season in December, the annual Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) takes place throughout the oldest parts of town - which is very cozy and romantic.
