Fashion Do's and Dont's

I do not mean to bring up any offensive topics in this thread, but I am curious to know about the stance on 'fashions' in Germany. For example, I've heard that wearing white shoelaces in boots shows that you have certain 'beliefs' (just as in the way in this country if you wear a football shirt of a certain club, you are not really showing your support of the club, but telling people what religion you follow).

Is this true, and are there any other items of clothing or accessories that signify/stand for anything?
