Why We Serve

To further society.  The interpretation and carrying out of the will of society, in an impaired world of imperfect communications and subjugated individuals, is carried out by all of us, but most especially by government.  There are two key components of such a society - those within it: us, and those without: government.  This is not to say that the government is independent of society - the government arises from within society, but acts outside society.

2          The government acts to carry out the collective will of society, from self-preservation and defense, to economic and socio-political development, to policing and censure.  This is because the government is an instrument expressly set up to stand apart from society, to listen for the collective will, and is, as a matter of course, best placed to affect society as a whole.

3          The government’s role is much maligned, rightly so to some extent, as the power of government is easily abused.  Having said that, the government which is best able to interpret the will of society is the best government, but it is not necessarily so recognized.

4          The recognition of the role of government and the imperative to ensure that governance is carried out ably, is then the reason for why we serve.  We serve in our own ways, within and without government, as we see fit, for the furtherance of society.
