Number 1 on the list of things you don't want to hear when you step on a scale:
"Oh my GOD!!! You need to lose a LOT of weight, girl!"
Someone actually said this to me recently. Yelled it, really, probably loud enough for everyone in the building to hear. No, not a health care worker; it was my new friend from work. In her defense, she's Puerto Rican, and very outspoken.
On our lunch break, we had been discussing how we both needed to lose weight. She decided, for both of us, that we were going to start dieting and exercising the very next week, but first we needed to weigh ourselves to figure out exactly how much we needed to lose. (I've already been doing that for like 2 months, but ooooooh kay...) She grabbed my arm and marched us over to the nurses' end of the building, with the big electronic scale. Since it was lunchtime, there were no patients back there.
She hopped on the scale, and was fairly perturbed by the readout. She started saying the things every woman who thinks she's fat says when she steps on a scale: Oh, man, I can't believe I've gained that much weight, yuck, I've really got to work my ass off, etc.
Then she made me get on the scale. HA!
She saw what it said, stepped backwards, clapped her hands to her mouth, and shouted to the rooftops about my urgent need to lose weight. I'll repeat what she yelled, in case you didn't get the full impact at the beginning of this story.
"Oh my GOD!!! You need to lose a LOT of weight, girl!"
Here's where I gamely try to look on the bright side:
At least she was surprised. That must mean I'm carrying it well, or something. Also, I got the chance to make someone feel really good about herself. And that's always nice.
