Please, sir, I want... an explanation

Hey, I have a question for all you people out there who read. Specifically, those of you who have read Oliver Twist.

When the hell did he learn to read?

The book mentions him poring over his books. Why isn't he illiterate? Who taught him to read? And when? He was orphaned at birth. He never went to school (at any rate, he hasn't gone yet, but I'm not finished with the book yet). No mention is made of him learning to read either at the workhouse or with the undertaker. I know Fagin didn't teach him to read. He was too busy being sick at Brownlow's house to learn how. And they haven't said a single word about him learning to read at Mrs. Maylie's house.

Am I missing something?
