It was a simple transaction. At least it should have been. It was odd, the things she was thinking about that night in the unmarked car. Neon lights blinked on and off, the faded sign buzzing-part of it was burnt out, but it didn’t matter. It was in Chinese. While she knew enough to make very, very minimal conversation, Wheeler hadn’t learned much since arriving in China.
Her contacts knew enough English to communicate. Not all of them were Chinese, either, and most all of them had someone in their groups who knew more English than the rest, who knew just enough about America to keep them suspicious of her, regardless of how much she tried to gain their trust.
Maybe they could sense it in her-the unwillingness to acclimate. She was supposed to be training other detectives-she was supposed to be gung-ho, the team leader on this.
And even though Wheeler knew that this was right, knew that she was supposed to be there, she had to admit slightly resenting Ross for giving her the assignment. She knew it was important and knew it would advance her career. But wasn’t Major Case already the biggest advancement she could make, besides earning a higher officer rank?
So there she was in an unmarked car, trying to get through it, counting the time till she could return to New York, wondering if her star had risen too fast-wondering if she would end up like Nina Cassady, over-publicized and unfairly tossed out of the squad that the brass had been so quick to assign her to. One minute you were the Department’s darling, the face of the NYPD, the next minute you were walking a beat on Staten Island.
She was so into her head-the one thing you weren’t supposed to do while undercover-that she didn’t think twice when she heard the voice.
“Hey! Officer! You officer!” The broken English and the man’s proximity to her open window didn’t phase her.
Her mind wasn’t in Hong Kong and so she didn’t think about it when she glanced up and answered “Can I help you?” to his repeated call of “Officer! You officer!”
When she saw his face, she knew that she’d been made.

Her backup noticed something was wrong when she didn’t check in over the radio forty-five minutes later. They drove swiftly around the block, headed for her car. Without making themselves obvious, they discovered that the car was still there, keys in the ignition. Wheeler was not.

Two days later, unable to get hold of Danny Ross’s direct line or cell phone, Captain Greg Brogdon called the Major Case Squad’s bullpen.
The phones began to ring and Brogdon hoped he would be able to reach Captain Ross.
