Megan yawned, looking at the digital clock radio next to her bed.  Out in the living room, Karen was watching what must have been the fourth or fifth chick flick in a row.  She'd had to rent them all - that sort of thing was not Megan's style.  She'd also ( Read more... )

Bobby leaned on the door frame as he knocked rhythmically on Wheeler's door.

"MEGGIN!" Karen yelled from the living room.

Megan rolled her eyes and got up from her bed. She'd heard the knocking. It's not like her place was huge or anything. She went from her room down the short hall and out into the living room to answer the door. Turning the knob, she looked up at Goren. "Yo."

"Megan!" he said, a little too enthusiastically, then leaned in to hug her. When he pulled back, he started rambling, "You know, I really, really appreciate you doin' this for me. You don't have to and I k now I'm probably a big inconvenience, but it means a lot to me."

Megan tried not to laugh. She hadn't thought that he was actually going to hug her. Drunk people.

"It's not a big deal, Goren. I have lots of floorspace just wasting away. Well...not lots. But you know."

"All I need," he said, then paused in thought, "is... 76 inches of floorspace and I will be perfectly content." He went into the apartment and stood in the middle of the floor. Turning in a complete circle, he scanned the room, noting the sister. "Nice digs ya got here," he said, coming to face Megan again.

She couldn't suppress a chuckle this time. "Thanks...uh...that's my sister, Karen." She motioned to the annoyed redhead on the couch.

Karen looked up with a brow raise, as if to say 'great, another weird cop.'

Bobby turned around again and grinned at Karen. "Hi there. You don't know me, but," he took a step forward, putting his hand on his chest, "I'm Bobby. You can call me Bobby."

"Or I could call you Drunky McLosercop," Karen muttered, already looking back at the TV.

"Karen," Megan hissed. To Bobby, she said, "Uh--do you want some coffee or something?"

Bobby pointed at Karen and said, "Oh, she's fresh. No, no, wait, there's a name for that... what is it?"

He turned to Megan and nodded, "Yeah, coffee is good." He started walking towards the kitchen, and muttered under his breath, "Oh, yeah. It's 'bitch'."

Karen was too engrossed in her movie to hear.

Megan only snorted. "Sit down, make yourself at home."

"Don't mind if I do," he said, taking a seat at the kitchen table. He leaned both arms on the table, propping his chin in his hands. Looking up at Megan with a droopy, confused expression, he asked, "Did I mention how much I appreciate this?"

"It's really not a problem," she said as she pulled the can of Folgers from the cabinet above the coffee maker.

He nodded. "So... why... is your sister here?" He waved a hand quickly and added, "No, no, let me guess. She is also homeless!"

"She got evicted," Megan rolled her eyes and dumped a scoop full of coffee grounds into the filter.

He giggled into his hand. Raising his voice loud enough for Karen to hear, Bobby said, "Rent. It's a bitch."

It was hard to tell if Megan was amused or bothered by the remark. She turned the coffee pot on.

"So, uh, you know when you get to go back to work?"
