From the
New York Times:
Ford Motor and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group said Wednesday that they had settled “all substantive commercial terms” on a sale of Volvo, clearing the way for the Chinese automaker to purchase Ford’s Swedish unit.
If the deal goes through (and it will), Turbox will be the last Volvo I own. This isn't about anti-Chinese xenophobia or anything like that. Just go ahead and watch
a crash test of
a Chinese car. This is an attempt by a Chinese company to change that perception by acquiring a brand internationally renown as a pioneer in automobile safety, but anyone with any sense is going to have alarm bells going off in their heads given the reliability and safety issues attendant with Chinese automobiles and Chinese historic lack of concern for their workers, customers, and the environment.
Volvo essentially taught Ford how to build safe cars (every Ford passenger car built today is based on a Volvo platform), but Ford needs the blood money and is selling Volvo down the river. Volvo might live on, but it's not going to be the same company that built the 544, Amazon, 100-series, 200-series, 700-series, 800-series, or 900-series. Hell, it's not going to be the same company it is right now in a few years. It's sad to have to say goodbye to an old, faithful friend, knowing they're going to die from the inside out in the next few years. It's even sadder because it never had to happen this way.
