I wonder if the Cubs won their game that day.

One year ago today, right about this time, I was making a mad dash down from Madison to Chicago.  I had gotten a phone call from our jeweler a few hours before.  She told me
uisinger's engagement ring was finally in from the smith, and that I could pick it up.  I hopped into the Turbox and drove up to Madison as quickly as I dared, hoping I could make the round trip in time to get back to Lincoln Square before
uisinger got home from work.

I would have made it, too, but for the backup of Cubs traffic.  While I was sitting on the Kennedy, bumper-to-bumper and just inside that constantly-under-construction toll plaza near O'Hare, my phone rang.  It was
uisinger, asking where I was.  I told her that I'd driven out to the 'burbs to hit up a military surplus store for a few items, and that I was stuck in Cubs traffic and would be home soon.  A few minutes later I called her dad in Iowa and asked for his permission to propose.  He said yes.  A few hours later we made it official.

It's hard to believe sometimes that it's been a year since that day.  At other times it feels like we've been engaged for much longer than that, and that the wedding will never come.  But I've never once felt like I made a mistake by making that frantic 300-mile drive so I could finally put that ring on her finger.

jo, engagement
