(This happened about a week ago. It follows storyline mainly with her sister Evie, who has been in town visiting. This is the beginning of things that have escalated between Lani and Evie. More to come. Also, I have several pieces I've written from Evie's perspective over the last few months. If anyone is interested, please say so and I'll post them in chelsea piers.)
Kala and Lani had been on the couch watching television. It had been awhile since they had been home together, so they had dinner and relaxed. Evie, who was supposedly visiting, wasn't around. Neither were quite sure where she was spending her time.
Sometime before midnight, when Lani was getting ready to head for bed, the front door opened. They both looked up as Evie walked into the living room. She had been drinking again, and it was obvious to both sisters. Until then, it had remained mostly unspoken. Kala bit her lip and kept her eyes to the TV. Whatever was going on between her sisters was getting too much for her. She hated fighting.
"Have fun?" Lani asked quietly, but dryly. Evie gave her oldest sister a blank stare then sat down on Kala's other side.
"Tons," Evie replied.
"Is that how you're gonna spend all your time here? Going out wherever and getting drunk?" All three sisters had their eyes on the TV as Lani spoke.
"Beats being here."
A long tense silence.
Lani swiveled around and glared past Kala. "Then why the hell are you here? Is this some kinda game for you? Throw the fact that you're stooping back to your old ways in our faces?" Kala sunk down in the couch a bit as Evie turned and glared back at Lani.
"Oh yea, because that's what I'd do. Fuck my problems, I just want to mess around with you."
"Stop," Kala tried to interject. Lani got to her feet and pointed at Evie.
"Don't try to guilt me. Tell me why you're here! You're obviously not here to visit us. Not me at least."
"It's where I ended up," Evie said, her eyes moving to a wall.
"Because you have no job! No where to live! No money, no car, and you're drinking again! If I go through your shit will I find out you're getting high again?! Because I swear to God, Evie - I won't put up with it!"
Evie jumped to her feet as well. "Won't put up with it?! Who the hell do you think you are?! This hard love of yours? It's bullshit! Bullshit, Lani! Because that's all I get from you! I'm the fuck up, we all know it, why do you always have to remind me?!"
"Can we just-" Kala stood up between them and held her hands up.
"No," Lani shook her head and looked at the middle sister. "You know you agree with me. Don't play neutral on this."
"Do you?" Evie looked at Kala blankly. "You think the same thing of me?"
"No!" Kala ran her fingers over her eyes. "I'm..I'm worried, Eve. We're all worried." She looked at Evie with a soft gaze.
"Fuck both of you," Evie said shaking her head. "I'm out of here." She started to walk off, but Lani reached past Kala and grabbed Evie's arm. Kala jumped out of the way and moved across the room. Evie swung around with a fist raised to hit her sister, but Lani caught her wrist tightly.
"You hate me," Lani said quietly, obvious pain in her voice. "You blame me for Dougie dying, you think I don't...so if you hate me so goddamn much, why are you here?" Lani didn't let Evie budge one bit and just stared at her. Evie's face was bright red, anger bursting from her eyes. Kala was standing away with her arms crossed, looking very lost, and Lani looked emotionless for the most part. Though inside she was ready to run away herself. She didn't want to be the big sister anymore. It didn't get her any comfort of her own. "Why?" Lani whispered after a long silence.
Evie struggled to get her wrist free. Lani finally let go and Evie's angry, forceful presence died down. Her head dropped and she backed up a step before sitting on the couch. "Because..." she shook her head slowly, refusing to look up at her family. Dougie flashed through her mind and she closed her eyes. "Because it's hard..." her voice shook. Her entire body started to shake.
Seeing Evie in such a manor was something rare. Kala didn't think for a moment before sitting on the couch and wrapping her arms around the younger woman. Evie sat there tensely. Lani watched them. "What is?" Lani asked softly. She wanted Evie to talk. To tell them what she felt, what she thought, things she never said.
"Everything," Evie said quietly. She moved a hand to her face as the tears began. "It just hurts...and I don't...I don't want to feel it!" Kala hugged her tighter and kissed the side of her head.
"It's okay," Kala whispered soothingly. "We're here...it's okay.." Lani stood over them uncertainly. Her arms crossed, she chewed on her lip a bit and watched the floor. She was still angry with Evie, but she wanted to comfort her, too. If she thought she'd get away with it.
The three kept to their spots for a long time as Evie cried and Kala rocked her. Lani stood there feeling completely useless. After a while a soft mutter came from Kala's arms.
"What?" Kala asked softly.
"I don't hate you," Evie said again, a bit louder. She brought her splotched, pained face up to look at Lani. She shook her head slowly. "I don't."
Lani gave a little nod, keeping her stiff composure. Evie nodded again and tucked her face back into Kala's arm. Kala met Lani's eyes and they both sighed and looked away.
"Come on," Kala said softly after more time had passed. "We're all tired. Let's...let's just go to sleep." She kissed Evie's head again, then stood up and walked away. Lani looked down at Evie who wouldn't look back. So Lani just nodded and went to her room. Evie kicked off her shoes and curled up on the couch. She pulled a blanket tight around herself and took long breaths until her tears went away.
