Lani was at the coffee pot in the corner of the squad room when her cell rang. She grabbed it and answered without checking the caller ID. "Rallita," she answered.
"Hiiii!" Evie's voice rang out a bit too cheerfully for Lani's taste. Her eyes shot to the clock on the wall, it was barely six pm.
"Where are you?" She asked, unamused. "Last anyone heard you were in Memphis - that you disappeared. Then Ken gets in touch with your job and finds out you took off for a couple weeks? What the hell? How do you expect to have that job or apartment when you return? Are you planning on returning? God, Evie, we thought you were finally settling down! Again!"
"Awwww, Lani. You're such a worrywart. Did you know that? You worry and worry and worry...live a little. Get laid or something."
Lani closed her eyes and slammed her coffee cup down then walked off to find some privacy. "You high?" She asked in a soft, but accusatory tone. Evie let out a groan.
"No. Not in a couple years. Remember?"
"Then you've been drinking."
"Hmm, maybe one or two."
"You're not supposed to be drinking. That's a part of sobriety. No drinking."
"Screw sobriety. I like things much better from this point of view."
Lani sat down and rubber her hand over her eyes. "Evie...honey...where are you?"
"Around. Uhh...I think near Baltimore. Or maybe D.C. You know...after awhile all the motels look the same."
"Where are you going?"
"Duhh, I'm coming to see my big sisters. Don't you miss me?"
"Of course I do. I just...listen...go to your hotel and get some sleep, okay? Please. Then call me and let me know where you are. I'll buy you a plane ticket here."
"Mmmm...okay."
"Promise me. No more drinking. No drugs, no guys."
"I promise, jeez," Evie whined like a child. Lani let out a thick sigh. Within seconds Evie's demeanor changed. "It's hard! You don't get how hard it is! Stop judging."
"I've got the right to judge at this point."
"No. You don't. You of all people do not get to judge how I handle things. Let's just remember your little role in all of this." Evie slammed the phone down and Lani slowly dropped her phone and ended the call. She shook her head and sat there a moment, trying to center herself before returning to her desk.
