She found him digging through a pile of paperwork in their bedroom, kneeling on the floor with his sleeves up. It had been several hours since they had returned from the doctors, after confirming what the home tests had told them just a week ago. They had been trying to conceive for around eight months so the shock that they had finally been successful hadn't quite sunk in for Alex yet. After the high of finding out and being happy at the news, things had calmed down into a comfortable silence as they both got lost in their thoughts about it. However, David now seemed to be over his shock as he rummaged through papers, a mountain of discarded papers forming behind him.
"What are you doing?" Alex asked, breaking the silence that had been the last hour.
"Making a mess." He replied, sarcastically, without looking up from what he was doing.
"Besides that." He looked over at her and then shrugged.
"Trying to find the papers that belong to my car." David told her and then looked back at what he was doing. Alex frowned, confused as to why he would need them. "I'm selling it." He gave her the answer before she could even ask it.
"Why? Because I'm pregnant or...?" She asked, her tone suggesting that she didn't want him to sell his car. They hadn't discussed selling anything, and he loved that car. He probably loved it more than he should.
"...no." He hesitated and then stood up. Alex sat down on the bed and waited for the truth. "Not just that--I'll get more money for it now. If I sell it later--say, when Jelly starts her dance classes, it won't bring as much money." She smiled at the nickname he used for their daughter, Ellie. "And yeah--" he gestured towards the general area of her abdomen.
"You know, you don't have to sell your car to put Ellie through dance lessons. We can probably manage without you doing that. Besides, if you sell that now, what will you sell to get her through college?" Alex smirked slightly.
He paused for a moment and then said, "Your car." She just laughed, nodding as she did so. Things went into a comfortable silence once again as David sat down next to her. Though he had had a sudden panic about money, he was still looking forward to what would happen next. He was hoping for a boy, but he wouldn't tell Alex that.
Last time, his fear had made him tell someone just two days after finding out. This time he had managed to keep a secret for a whole week. He was doing well, especially when he considered he was actually looking forward to this. That and he had yet to run into Connie Rubirosa- that lady could pull a secret out of anybody. This time he had a plan, and the plan involved their 32-month old daughter. Once they told her about the impending baby, he'd let her loose on others and see if she was better at keeping secrets than he was.
"Oh." Alex said suddenly, leaning over to hold up a plastic wallet holding several important documents. "This what you're looking for?"
David took it off her hands and examined it. "You know..." He waved it at her. "It's always in the last place you look."
Alex smirked. "It would help if you were wearing those glasses..."
