Three Years Later....

It was hard to believe time had gone by so quickly. She hadn't even realized it until one lazy Sunday afternoon it hit her that her babies were no longer babies. It was amazing how much they'd grown. She guessed it was true what people said, time flies when you're happy.

It was just a typical Sunday in the Shore household. Her five-year-old, Rachel, was sitting next to Alan on the couch reading a Seasame Street book to him. Five and already reading, Rachel amazed her preschool teachers with her intelligence and maturity for her age. She was always full of questions. Always wanting to know more. A simple "because" would never satisfy Rachel, and Alex wouldn't have it any other way. It was good to be inquisitive. Besides, considering her genes and who was raising her, she would expect nothing less.

Then there was Kathryn, trying very hard to get the dog to sit still for a tea party. Buster had run off three times already, but the three-year-old was stubborn as stubborn could be, and was determined to have her way. Kathryn was always in motion, from the moment her feet hit the floor in the morning to the moment she went to bed at night, she was on the go. It was amazing how much energy the kid had, and Alex wanted to enroll her in a tumbling class or something, anything just to give her a direction to focus all that energy. That kid had no fear, and was always climbing on things, jumping off things, and flipping off the furniture. She had nearly given Alan a heartattack the first time she'd launched herself over the coffee table after counting to three one day when she was almost two.

While they were two very different girls, both were happy and healthy, and Alan clearly adored them both. Even though Rachel wasn't biologically his own, he treated her just as he did Kathryn. Alex had never had any doubts he would. The lawyer and the detective had become a happy family. Complete with two kids and a dog. It was funny how life turned out, but they were happy. Sure, like any couple they had their disagreements. They had their fights. But they always managed to work it out, and make-up in the end. Life was good, and she could not ask for more.
